Instructions

Use one to two pounds of Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate per gallon of aquarium water. Two pounds per gallon or more will deliver best performance. An ideal bed depth is at least 3 inches.

Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate is designed to be a complete substrate but may also serve as a bottom layer with your choice of non-carbonate substrate.

For new aquarium setups simply pour in the entire contents of this bag and fill aquarium with de-chlorinated tap water or, for best results, de-ionized or distilled water. Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate will automatically segregate into 2 distinct layers with the finer material on the bottom (Bi-Modal). For established systems, drain and discard most of the liquid contents of the product before placing into the system.

Placing new gravels over the top ("capping") of an established gravel bed can be damaging to aquatic life. Gently mix new material into the existing bed with fingers. For added safety this process can be done in sections, over the course of a few days. This product may contain naturally magnetic minerals. Use caution when using magnetic algae scrapers.

After reading online reviews I was a little concerned that this product would not work for me. It actually worked perfect for what I was wanting. The black color is perfect with my tank. Some of the negative reviews stated that the product needed to be washed off or it would cause the water to be cloudy. This was untrue with my experience. I had zero clouding. The water was clear from day one. Even after moving some of the substrate around after adding the water. I love how it looks in my tank.

  • Better Substrate

I added the CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate, 20-lb bag (red) to my already established aquarium. I pushed aside some white gravel I had to one side and added the CaribSea on the other side. Thankfully, I rinsed out the CaribSea before adding it to my tank, because it looked like muddy cola swishing all around inside of the bag. It is more of a mixed reddish brown / brick / burgundy / maroon color than an apple red. So many opinions on the web, but mostly all claim the same thing, that any additional goodness of nutrients is next to nil. That being said, I didn't want to risk killing my fish! The fish tend to stay on the "Dark" side CaribeSea than the white light side. That's I added the CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate, 20-lb bag (red) to my already established aquarium. I decided to give a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars because I wish it really DID have the added nutrients for either the fish or plants, but that wasn't what I purchased this gravel for. I will definitely buy CaribSea again and I highly recommend it!!!! … more
