What is a safe litter to use for a kitten post-spaying?

I tried this litter before. I love the idea, cost & made in USA. I can't figure out how to scoop and separate the used / unused litter regardless of the scooper style. I was throwing away a full scoop of litter each time. Please explain how to do this OR is that just the way it is?

Answer by ChewySep 11, 2018
This particular litter does not clump and requires a bit more maintenance. It's advised to scoop from the top daily and change the entire litter weekly based on how it absorbs waste. Because it does not clump, unsoiled litter may remain in the scooper while cleaning.

Does this paper pellet litter turn into "sawdust" like the pine pellets?

Answer by ChewyMar 27, 2018
This litter is designed to uphold its shape and be virtually dust-less.

How big are the pellets? Can you compare their size to anything?

Answer by ChewyJul 22, 2020
Please refer to the attached photo to get an idea of the size of these pellets.

This litter is the best I’ve ever used. Cleaning the clumping little was a challenging event. Dust stink weight etc. using fresh news causes me to clean the box each day which keeps it always clean. It’s light weight, I only have to sprinkle a single layer in the box annd she scrapes it anll together when she’s done. I feel so much better Maisie always has a clean litter box to step in each day. You have to experience it to understand. Highly recommended, I’ll never use any other litter again.

I switched to this brand of cat litter when my cat got a mysterious allergic skin dermatitis (potentially from our corn-based cat litter). Still ruling out if that was the cause, but her skin has been great since we switched, so fingers crossed. This litter takes a little getting used to, but now I really like it. Some tips: If you scoop the pee shortly after they use it, you can easily tell the difference between soiled and clean litter because the pee-soaked pellets are darker and soggier. Once they dry, it's impossible to tell the difference. It's not the end of the world to miss out on the pee-litter because we generally put a smaller amount in the litterbox than we did with the clumping cat litter. Then we dump the whole thing out and refresh it with new litter about once a week. This actually keeps the whole thing smelling neat and clean all the time. The solid waste is really easy to scoop out daily. The only downside is if you are worried about your cat getting a urinary blockage (which my previous cat had once), it's a lot harder to confirm that the cat has peed each day. Once the pellets dry, it's hard to tell what happened in there. Also, this litter is not flushable, so you need to use bags of some sort to trash it. Feels really bad for the environment, but we got plant-based bags for this purpose - which ultimately increase the cost of using this litter. Still, it's a nice alternative to the corn-based litters. The Upside is that there is absolutely ZERO DUST of any kind.

My old lady didn't like clay litter. Her kidney disease meant she peed a LOT more in quantity than most cats, and it would result in clay litter caking between her toes. I switched her to this litter in a low-sided mortar tray per my vet's recommendation, and it helped her keep using the box for several more years. I do suggest putting a pee pad or some other absorbant liner under the litter, though. It takes time to absorb urine and since it doesn't clump, it can be harder to see what's soiled when you go to scoop and replace later. I can't comment about poop smell management, unfortunately, as my lady was on a medical CKD diet and her poops did not smell very much due to the low protein content.

There's pretty much no tracking because the litter is made of recycle paper pellets and either gets wet and stays inside the litter tray or the pieces that get thrown about when the kitty covers their business stays in its shape and is easily throw back into the tray. I much prefer this over the usual 'pellets' that you have to sieve to throw out the used bits which takes forever and is a much messier process. It's also far better (and more affordable) than other natural, biodegradable, or flushable litters because no matter what they advertise, there is ALWAYS tracking and more than you'd like... I'm never using another litter again.

I decided to switch from pretty litter because my cat Moss stopped having issues with crystals after her food was switched, and I was concerned about how dusty and small the pretty litter was because I’ve heard it has been affecting some cats lungs. Since the switch I was a little worried because of the size difference (Fresh News is a lot bigger) would bother them but it hasn’t at all! The kitties seem to like it and I’m a lot happier with the ease of cleaning, and the cost efficiency and sustainability of this litter! I change it’s fully more often, but the odor control is great and once you get used to differentiating the wet pellets from dry it’s a breeze to separate clean and dirty litter, and the litter left after scooping doesn’t seem to be affected or smell at all! Over all, very happy with Fresh News and I won’t be switching any time soon! Not endorsed just wanted to put my experience out there for other kitty parents!

This litter is AMAZING! No dust, no weird scent, no odor, highly absorbent AND affordable! With regular scooping of both solid waste and soaked pellets, I rarely need to change out the entire litter box at once anymore. I don't know it manages to absorb odors so well but it does. The only improvements I could suggest to the manufacturer are to perhaps make it easier to tell apart soiled pellet from clean pellets (like color changing or something) and offer a crumbles variety that feels more like traditional litter since it took a while for my cat to adapt to pellets.

Could be good for you, not for me

My cat has asthma so we are trying to find a dust-free litter that works for us. He didn't mind using these pellets, but they weren't a good fit for me. The pellets are big and don't fall through our scoop, so scooping #2 is a bit finicky to not also scoop out a bunch of pellets. But our problem was with urine. The pellets absorb well but then I couldn't always see where or if my male cat urinated, which is something that's important to monitor. When saturated enough the pellets mostly dissolve into dust but that can't be scooped. All this combinated made the ammonia smell BAD, and meant I was wasting pellets by over-scooping. If you have a litter box system that lets you sift out the broken down urine pellets, this litter would probably work well for you. I do not so it's not for us. Also my cat digging around in it is loud, and this litter still tracks so hopefully you have a vacuum that can pick up big pellets, which mine can't do I was hand picking them up
