is the foam a memory foam or orthopedic type quality???

The crate mat is polyurethane foam. This foam is a structured piece of foam designed to fit the cover and to fill out all the corners. This foam is not memory foam but is supportive like orthopedic foam.

Is the zipper of the cover on the long side of the mat?

The actual bed is great. The dogs find it very comfy but the edges have already ripped at the seams along the long side. Neither of the dogs have been scratching

Nope, ripped to shreds

Lasted a couple of weeks but then was ripped to shreds when our 7 mos old whippet got bored in his crate. He went in through the zipper and it was all over...foam
