How Freeze-Drying Works
The freeze-drying process used by Grandma Lucy’s removes 92% of the water in the ingredients, leaving a food that is lightweight, compact, shelf-stable and preservative-free. Compared to other drying processes like dehydration or air drying, freeze-drying is better at retaining the characteristics of raw food. About Grandma Lucy’s
Grandma Lucy’s began when founders Breann & Eric Shook started their quest for safe, healthy dog treats. Their 11-year old English Cocker Spaniel, Lucy, had developed food allergies that prevented her from eating most treats, and as they learned what was in pet food, they were surprised at the inferior ingredient quality. After consulting with vets and nutritionists, they started home cooking Lucy’s meals and treats, and what resulted was the basis for the healthy pet foods they make today.
