My Amelia had been having tummy troubles trying to find a food since her special diet food is constantly out of stock, I tried vegan/vegetarian fry foods since she needs to be on a low protein diet, she was having a very hard time. I switched her over to this and her tummy problems were solved! Definitely will be using this whenever her special food is out of stock!
I was excited to try this but when I received the package it is mostly dehydrated cabbage 15 heads to be exact. It gave one of my dogs massive diarrhea but my other two seemed to like it so I continued with it approximately 5 more days. Both dogs began to itch and scratch all over. I stopped feeding it to them and the itching stopped. I am sorry the product did not work for my dogs.
I used these base mixes to supplement my dog's kibble diet -- recently he developed kidney issues and I was able to quickly change my dog's diet to more base mix with protein toppers. This way I can control how much protein and phosphorus he's eating. It worked and his blood tests came back within normal range!
My picky dog who has to have limited ingredients and fat due to allergies and pancreatitis actually likes this as a topper on kibbles or mixed with meat and used as a topper. It is fairly green in color but he loves cabbage and it is good for his tummy, so this is a win for us.
My dog is a very small Chihuahua and a picky eater. She loved this at first prepared the way they suggested it but then stopped. I started to sprinkling it on her food dry and mixing it in and she loves it this way. So if you need to add an additive to your pet's protein diet, try sprinkling this on dry and mixing in rather than rehydrating and mixing it in.
I went down the path of making my own dog food, but don’t have time to prep. Our dog is extremely picky, and I had my doubts about ordering a big box. He loved it. So does his friend that often visits. We don’t use as his primary food, but his nightly “wet food” treat and it’s been amazing.
Four of my six dogs have no issues with this premade fruit & veggie mix, the other two will eat it, but would prefer something else. This fruit/veggie mix is heavy on the ‘greens.’ Seems like a lot of spinach and other green veggies and very few fruits. Because of this, I occasionally mix this in with another premix brand that is heavy on the fruits and light on the veggies. I make my own food with ground meats with bone. Because I have large dogs I make several 20# Tupperware containers at one time. I have found if I cut the meat chubs open and place the meat rolls in the containers and then pour the dry HK in and it basically rehydrates from the meat. This makes the food ‘stiffer’ as opposed to thin or watery. My dogs prefer it stiffer as opposed to runnier. Overall I like Honest Kitchen products, but tend to ‘tweak’ them due to being heavy on certain ingredients (in this case, heavy on the greens and too light on the fruits).
We are longtime THK users as that's the only thing that works for my rescue shepherd with an esophageal disorder. We always get the grain free beef but switched to this since I've been cooking at home much more and would be able to add the necessary protein. We love it even more than the other products! His coat is so soft, his 'old man groans' (he's 10) have lessened and he seems to have more energy. Recommend!
My dog who hates EVERYTHING loves the base mix - THANK YOU
I like this mix of flavorful fruits and veggies and usually mix it with Honest Kitchen's dehydrated chicken recipe or the beef recipe, and use as a topper for my girl's kibble. So much better than canned dog food and she loves it.
