Adult: Feed 1 can per 6-8 lbs. of body weight per day.
Kittens: Require up to two and a half times this amount.
Gestation & Lactation: Allow free access to food. Adjust the amount of food you serve based on the age, size and activity level of your cat. Food should be fed at room temperature. Promptly refrigerate the unused portion. Fresh water should be available at all times.
If you are currently free-feeding a kibble, the first step is to feed your cat at meal times. Put the kibble down for a 20-30 minute time frame for a few days to help your cat recognize that this is feeding time. Yes, your cat will be hungry at these mealtimes if they have been used to grazing all day long, but this step will help in the transition.
Once these meal times are established, then try introducing canned food. Your cat will either like it and your transition took no time at all, or you may have to keep trying to entice the cat. If your cat will not eat the canned food you have offered, try putting some kibble on the top to entice the cat. If that doesn’t work, feed kibble and try a different protein at the next mealtime. It may take a while – a few day or a few weeks – for your cat to realize that this is food, but remember that you are doing it to better your cats health.
I have been purchasing this for about 3 months. I just received 2 cases where every single can smelled very different than usual... yup.... I opened them all. They smelled bad/rotten. Chewy is replacing but I just lost confidence. If the lot number of the replacement is the same as the rotten one I won't be happy.
My three cats, Miso, Sage & Beni, loved eating this food! Duck is one of their favorite proteins so this recipe was definitely a fan favorite in our household. With so many meat recipes available, it really helps with food rotation so the kitties do not get bored with their diet. Highly recommend trying out this brand and this flavor. Will be getting more for the kitties to add this into their daily rotation!
We used to love this food, I used to feel confident in the quality of this food, and it was a safe food for us considering all three of my cats have different food allergies/sensitivies. The Hound & Gatos name used to stand for something and I'm completely heartbroken at how far they've fallen. Every batch has been wildly different, but the one thing every batch has had in common over the past few months is food that is singed at the bottom along with a crust of burnt juices. I've found pieces of a blue cling wrap-type plastic in the food- notified the company and never heard back from them- I keep finding hard black chunks of goodness only knows what scattered throughout the food. I end up scraping off and throwing out around a quarter of a can each feeding and I'm sick of it. I came here to warn people about the changes to the food, which are appallingly unhygienic and probably unsafe (eating plastic certainly isn't safe!), and now that I see others saying the same things, and combined with the company's continued silence on this subject and refusal to address these issues, I can only assume they simply don't care. What on earth happened to H&G?! This used to be the best limited ingredient duck on the market and now it's garbage. I'm calling Chewy tomorrow to ask for a refund for the past two cases I've ordered because they're the absolute worst I've ever received and I've had to throw out so much food. And whole cans! I've had to throw away a few unopened cans that had huge dents near the seal at the top. This is just absolutely heartbreaking and now I have to find a new limited ingredient duck, which is practically mission impossible. No pet food company really cares about cats with food allergies. If you're reading this, I know you get it.
My cat was diagnosed with IBD and since switching to this brand of food, my cat no longer has diarrhea or vomiting episodes. He is doing well! The one frustrating thing is the quality which I believe has to do with how the food is canned. I have found mold and a black film on the bottom of the can, as well as weird black chunks. The food itself is fine, I have to scrape a pretty large portion of food off so that my cat can eat it. I have thought about switching because of this, but he is doing so well that I am too nervous to risk it. Without this issue, the food would be 5 stars.
Kitty was a bit hesitant to try this but enjoyed it after a thorough inspection! The limited ingredients are easy on her tummy. Happy to have this as an option at meal time.
To stars is generous for this review, as my cats will still reluctantly eat what I have left of the food, so it isn't wasted. In too many cans I've found hard black things, and one can had a huge black thing that looked like part of a duck wing. My cats used to love this food, but it has changed from the earlier years. Their favorite foods were duck, pork, and rabbit, but only duck is being made now of those three, and they don't finish eating their food when I give it to them. It was the best quality of food I found at the time, but now I have switched them over to Tiki Cat After Dark food, which is having distribution problems, adding to my problems of consistently finding quality cat food. When I can get it, Tiki Cat After Dark has a nice selection of rabbit, venison, and shredded chicken.
I can not begin to say how thankful I am to have found this food. My Penelope is 15yrs old and has had IBS for 14 of those years. I have tried every limited ingredient, sensitive stomach, IBS, cat food on the market and they would work for about a week then the diarrhea would come back. Then one night I was reading articles about feline IBS as I use to spend many hours a week doing and they recommended this cat food. I decided to try it because the vet had just upped her dosage of metronidazole and Prednisone and Penelope looked miserable. I started her on the food and within 2 days there was no diarrhea. Then we noticed her brother Finn who is a diabetic with pancreatitis really liked the food too , so we gave it to him. His blood sugar is better regulated and he has not had any issues with his pancreas. They have been on the food for 6 months and are doing great. Thank you Hound & Gatos ❤️
I was trying this based on the success I've had with my cats for other products by Hound & Gatos but my cats won't eat it. Neither will my sisters. I'm donating to the local shelter. I hope it doesn't go to waste.
The items I bought came extremely fast and I was notified by email
I have some picky eaters and some hoovers. Out of six cats no one would eat this which was strange. Don't want to leave a bad review because it is good food. Maybe the liver but they have had liver before. I guess the moral of this review is to just try it.
