For Adult cats, feed 1 can per 6 - 8 lbs of body weight per day. Kittens require up to 2 1/2 times this amount. For pregnant and lactating females, allow free access to food. Adjust the amount of food you serve based on the age, size and activity level of your cat. Food should be fed at room temperature.
If you are currently free-feeding a kibble, the first step is to feed your cat at meal times. Put the kibble down for a 20-30 minute time frame for a few days to help your cat recognize that this is feeding time. Yes, your cat will be hungry at these mealtimes if they have been used to grazing all day long, but this step will help in the transition.
Once these meal times are established, then try introducing canned food. Your cat will either like it and your transition took no time at all, or you may have to keep trying to entice the cat. If your cat will not eat the canned food you have offered, try putting some kibble on the top to entice the cat. If that doesn’t work, feed kibble and try a different protein at the next mealtime. It may take a while – a few day or a few weeks – for your cat to realize that this is food, but remember that you are doing it to better your cats health.
I have a cat who is allergic to fish and also has no teeth, so I had to spend some time searching for wet food that had no fish in it. I started with H&G lamb, later tried pork, chicken, and turkey. She craves the stuff and the other cats line up to finish off . The texture is smooth and moist, no harmful preservatives, no thickeners that might be harmful and aren’t necessary anyway. My kitty’s getting a little porky now, so she only gets turkey or chicken, but my other cat, who is recovering from surgery and needs to put on some weight, is getting pork, salmon, or the lamb/chicken/salmon blend. This is my go to wet food, don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t find it! All seven cats come running when the hear the lid pop!
I had the same problem: the chicken flavor has a quality changed since late 2022. It is very watery, almost gross looking . I am glad I trusted my instincts and did not feed it to my cat. Especially I read other comments that some cats had diarrhea. Reading from their official website, they switch part of chicken production line from USA to South Africa plant, a plant that used to produce Tuna ( red flag 1) . One more ingredient was added to receipt called Tricalcium Phosphate ( red flag 2). They are aware of consistent change , but decide to keep as it is and said it is closely monitored ( red flag 3) . I dont doubt that the food is edible for cat, but nobody is paying 50 dollar cat food monthly to just have something edible. Feeding this to your cat is no different than introducing a new brand of cat food, you are taking the risk of upsetting their stomach
This is the absolute worst food you can purchase your pet. I should have read recent reviews before purchasing. Shortly after feeding this to my cat she experienced severe vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. She refused to eat and would not move. I brought her to the emergency vet and wound up spending thousands of dollars. If you love your pets you would refrain from purchasing from this brand. While I am happy that the brand “hound and gatos” personally reached out to me after expressing my concern I am not so happy with their response. Their rep told me that the food (that I shipped back to them) did not look like it was the correct consistency. The rep even stated “I do not know how your cat consumed this”. Being a first time buyer I was not aware that the consistency was different. The rep told me that they receive their shipments from two separate warehouses and that one of the warehouses must have canned the food improperly. I was told over and over again that this was “not a food safety issue” it was a “food quality issue”. Personally if my cat and others cats according to reviews are getting sick from consuming food, I would consider this a food safety issue. The best part of this entire conversation was that the rep told me chewy might still have access to this contaminated lot of food and if I purchase this food off of chewy it is likely I will get the same lot that caused my cat to become sick. The representative did not seem concerned enough to contact chewy and let them know the issue. They simply told me to order from them instead. They fully acknowledged the fact that chewy unknowingly has access to contaminated food. I am grateful that the company offered to give me free food after my horrible experience however, after my conversation with this rep I am extremely hesitant to feed it to my cat. The fact that a representative from the company is telling me that the food does not look good and their pet would not consume it is extremely alarming especially since chewy can still sell this lot to customers. I was told they “no longer use the warehouse with contaminated food” however they will not explicitly state this is a food safety issue. If more than one animal is experiencing negative side affects from consuming this food than the brand needs to do better and completely remove it from shelves and online. This is completely unacceptable and I hope my review deters others from purchasing this food. Chewy immediately refunded me and reached out but I do not believe they have been made aware of the entire situation.
My cat is quite picky when it comes to wet food textures but she gobbled this up so fast! The consistency is a little runnier than most foods but I think that is what she likes about it.
I'm very pleased with the quality of Hound & Gatos 98% Chicken & Liver cat food. I also like the pate texture as it's easier to divide the portions for multiple feedings during the day. My cat enjoys the food a lot and I like the ingredients more than other brands I've used in the past for my other cats.
In the last several months, this food has changed so much! It used to be a thick pate, but now it’s a watery mess that my cats won’t even touch. Luckily Chewy is amazing and refunded me for the quality control issues. It’s a shame bc my kitties used to love it but now won’t even come near it and I’m having to change their food again which is hard on their bellies.
At first this food seemed like a great choice. The texture was perfect and my cat loved it. But the last two boxes I’ve received have been incredibly watery and disappointing. The cat doesn’t seem to like the soupy version. Very very disappointing since he struggles to find a wet food that he likes and so the search must continue
I needed a low carb food for one of my cats and Hound&Gato looked good. Fortunately my cat loves this chicken and Liver. Very fine and fluid texture. Good also since he does not have many back teeth left........
My kitties have eaten this before and enjoyed it. This time they refused more than a bite or two. It has good ingredients and I hope they will eat it again later. The only change I notice is that it's much wetter, almost like soup.
I feed my cats other flavors from this brand (turkey, trout and duck) which they love. They are always a smooth pate. This chicken flavor is a completely different consistency, very watery and grainy. My cat took a few bites and threw up 5 minutes later.
