My cat is a senior and also has a neurological condition that makes her a little unsteady at times. She has always been great about using the litter box but, after watching her stumble and practically fall out of a box with sides of the usual height, more than, once, I decided to try this box. I ended up getting two, one for each floor of my house. The litter box is pricey, no doubt about it, but it is SO much easier for kitty to get in and out of. She's a small cat and the small size, with the low side on the short end, works well for her. I can't give it five stars, though, because, unlike some other litter boxes with treated surfaces, clumping litter really sticks to this box making scooping a chore. My cat is very happy with this litter box but I would be happier if it were easier to clean.
My 16 years old one-eyed cat has arthritis, she limps and has difficulty walking even on straight surfaces. I was building ramps for her previous litters to help her get in and out more easily. She stopped covering her poops and pee a few months back. I assumed it because of her arthritis and limited sight. She fell in the litter box a few times lately, so I decided to try something new. I got this litter box as it's wide and easier to access / no need for a ramp. This was a GREAT decision: after day 1 she started covering her pee, on day 2 she covered her poops! I guess not having a top on the litter top makes it easier to see for her and easier to walk around the spots already used. Also, for your senior happiness: keep two litter boxes around instead of one: they'll use the other one if it's getting "crowded" in there. This will avoid messes and will make both your lives easier! Definitely recommend this litter box for senior cats with difficulty to walk. HOWEVER, if you have a cat doesn't have difficulty moving, I would NOT recommend it: it is low level and yes, the cat will spread litter more easily. If this is your case, I would recommend getting a litter with higher walls and including a ramp instead.
I'm a full-time cat sitter. For a lot of my clients with cats that are older and/or have kidney/urinary tract issues, this litter box has reduced or eliminated peeing outside of the box. My senior cat has kidney issues. She pees a lot and very often. I bought her three regular litter boxes. However, she would pee in each one only once. I cleaned her litter boxes multiple times a day, but that wasn't enough. She would pee on the floor. I tried using pee pads, but that made her stop using the regular boxes entirely. I got this litter box and removed the pee pads. She stopped peeing outside of the box entirely, and will actually use this box up to four times! I told my vet about this litter box. She loved that the entryway was low to the ground, and said that she would recommend this litter box to her clients. If your cat has trouble using the litter box, this product is worth trying out.
My male tabby developed arthritis and some mobility issues. The lower side made access to the litter box easier. Also the box is big enough that he didn't mind sharing with his litter-mate sister. I looked for a similar product in local stores, but wasn't successful until I checked Chewy.
I bought this litterbox for my two 16yr old cats, one in particular who seemed to be having trouble maneuvering around in their regular sized boxes. His poops were coming out as smaller pebbles rather than the normal look. My vet suggested being older and maybe some arthritis made the small boxes are hard for him. So I looked around and ordered this and no more small poops! Out of 3 boxes this one is now the favorite! It's low, large and has the even lower entrance side. I have a regular sized version of this and these boxes scoop out so easily, nothings sticks. I would definitely recommend this brand but also this sized box if you have an older cat or just want to give your cat more room.
I am overall very pleased with this product, for the purpose of making my elderly cats lives easier and more comfortable, since there was some emerging issues of having accidents over the side of the regular litter box. The lower walls are easier for the cat to get into. The downside is the lower walls can make for some extra clean up as far as extra litter spillage from "digging" but also, still the occasional extra spillage from "accidents" over the side. I use the pee-pads on the floor near the sides and this takes care of that issue. So, kitty's are happy which is my #1 goal and I am too.
This litter box has been life changing for our senior kitty Benny! Unsurprisingly Benny has arthritis (we don't know exactly how old he is, but we estimate he's at least 10-11 years old) and was starting to have accidents around the litter box. I started looking at different "senior kitty friendly" litter boxes and decided to give this one a try. It is on the pricey side, but is worth every penny! Benny has a much easier time using the box and the accidents have stopped. It's very easy to clean and doesn't seem to hold any odors. I've been so happy with this box that I replaced all of the other boxes in the house with them! Thanks Chewy for carrying such a great product and making Benny's life more comfortable!
Seems my cat is longer than was his existing litter box. I had looked for a larger box for him, this was the only one I could find. I do find the cost to be rather on the high side , but as it's working out for him, I'm glad I got it.
I like how wide and easy it is to scoop. Unfortunately, my cats keep peeing over the sides on accident. It's also really easy for them to kick litter out the front while burying. I could live with the front litter kick if the sides were higher, but having to wipe up cat pee spray is not fun.
George is having problems with his back legs. This litter box allows him to step in without climbing over the side. It is a bit larger than I expected, but that isn't a problem.
