Bird seed formulations that have shells on the seeds can grow if it falls to the ground. Lyric Supreme Wild Bird Mix does have shells on some of the seeds. Not only that, but since they do not have shells there is no debris on the ground, it's 100% edible and the birds love these mixes.

Find a bird seed which shows the precise percentage of different grains and seeds; avoid those like this one which have vague percentages.
