At what age is a guinea pig considered a senior?

Answer by ChewyMar 16, 2023
A guinea pig is often considered a senior when they are approximately 4 years old, but as each piggie is unique, it is difficult to anticipate how little or how long their lifespan will be.

What's the difference between the adult and senior formula?

Answer by ChewyOct 27, 2025
The senior recipe is made with 6 sources of high fiber ingredients to help support the aging digestive system, and also includes 3 sources of natural antioxidant ingredients to help support physical and mental vitality and activity.

Great product!

I trust all of Oxbow’s pet foods. But my guinea pig won’t eat this senior food after eating Oxbow Garden Select foods for five years.

I cannot believe the difference in my 5 year old guinea pig with this food compared to other cheaper foods. I initially got him this when he turned 4, then once it was gone I got him another brand because this is pricey. His condition quickly went downhill on the cheaper food, his coat got dull, he was practically lifeless, he just wasn’t doing well at all and I thought his time was almost up. I wondered if it was the cheap food, so I got him this again. He rapidly improved, his coat got shiny again, he was much more active and just seemed better overall. Once that bag was gone, I once again got him cheaper food because money was tight. He quickly went downhill again. So I got him another bag of this, and once again it brought him back to life. He does not act like a senior piggy anymore after getting this food consistently for several bags now, he’s gotten stronger and can once again climb himself out of his cage, whereas before he’d lost the strength to do so. He’s active, alert, vibrant, you’d never guess he is 5 now. I’ll never get him another food again, it may be a lot more expensive than other brands, but if you want your senior piggies healthy & happy and continuing to live a long life, it’s totally worth it.

My boy loves this

My boy loves this brand and I switched him over to the senior food last year (he just turned 5 this summer). He loves it and eats it right up

I swear by Oxbow’s feed for all of my small pets, past and present. Their feed (plus proper care) are what I accredit my guinea pig’s longevity to. He’s turning 10 this year and has no idea that he is. He still moves like he’s several years younger and everything about him is bright and healthy looking. There’s many good brands of feed out there, but Oxbow is the one I’ll always recommend first.

Large, convenient size

Her favorite, in the flavor she prefers, appropriate for her age and diet requirements, in a large size I like because I don’t need to order frequently.

Good nutrition

It pleases me that Oxbow made a special food geared specifically toward the elderly guinea pig. Makes me feel we are taking good care of her

Better for overweight gpig

I have a neutered male gpig. He is a bit overweight. Vet suggested I feed this to help get weight down a bit. He likes it, so win/win
