is this hay dust extracted

This hay has been extracted to reduces fine dust particles

What cut hay is this?

Answer by ChewySep 20, 2022
Oxbow uses both first and second cutting hay. First cutting hay typically has more stems with larger seed heads. The second cutting is more likely to be leafier and softer with more brown leaves and smaller seed heads. Rather than sell hay by cutting, Oxbow strives to harvest all hay early in its growth cycle – when specific product attributes are most likely to meet the needs and preferences of most small herbivores.

Does Timothy hay vary in color depending upon the harvest batch?

Answer by ChewySep 13, 2018
Hay and grasses such as Timothy, Brome, Alfalfa, etc. are naturally grown, sun dried, and harvested. The weather, growing, and harvesting conditions of hay and grasses each year can affect the crop's color and quality. Storage conditions can also affect the color. Hay can be packaged with a beautiful green color however if the product is stored in a lighted area it will begin to turn brown. This does not mean it has lost its nutritional value. It is also possible a bag may include some brownish leaves, again this is not unusual and does not affect the nutritional value of the product.

Does the 25 lb box contain any resealable bags within the box?

Answer by ChewyFeb 22, 2023
The 9 pound, 25 pound and 50 pound options do not come in resealable packages.

Hard to trust the boxes

My bun loves this brand/flavor of Hay, but twice I've tried to get the bigger box to be more economical, plus price wise it makes more sense, but honestly both boxes

My bun loves this brand/flavor of Hay, but twice I've tried to get the bigger box to be more economical, plus price wise it makes more sense, but honestly both boxes were crappy hay. They are the dust small broken pieces that just feel much less premium than if I buy the 90oz bags. Ends up feeling like a waste of money bc there is so much to get through and my bun just turns his nose up at it. Its like the bottom of every hay bag was thrown into a box

I’m usually very satisfied with Oxbow Timothy hay and I’ve exclusively fed this brand to my bunny and chinchilla for many years. However, something about this recent box seemed off, like it wasn’t given enough time to dry or possibly is mixed with something else. Now I’m almost certain that there is something wrong with it since my bunny is showing early signs of stasis. The ONLY thing different in his diet is this new box of hay. I’m rather upset about this. I would like a refund or possibly a new box of hay to replace this one.

The hay is good quality, and the bunny finds it is great for all day munching.

It has good quality Timothy hay that is packaged well. The bunny is excited when she hears one of us getting a handful or two of the hay from the box. It is nice

I have been using this hay for years and for some reason it is brown and rabbits will not eat it. Ordered two boxes at the same time and both are the worst quality. So disappointed but will reach out to a Chewy and they will make it right! Love Chewy’s customer service.

This could have been a fluke, and chewy was amazing at taking care of it, but the quality of the hay in the largest bulk box was poor in comparison to the smaller quantity bags/boxes I’ve received in the past. It appears to be more like first cutting hay. It’s yellow and stemmy, doesn’t have the usual sweet smell. Most importantly, my guinea pigs did not like it much. It was not moldy or bad in anyway, just not the quality I’m used to getting from Oxbow. I only ordered the big box to save some money on a bulk order, but not worth it if the guinea pigs won’t eat it. Photo of how much they’re wasting, when they usually clean it up well.

We only went with this brand because our other hay order was unable to be filled due to a supply issue. This oxbow shipment was very dusty and the pieces were yellow, not fresh. The other issue is that it seemed like it was first cut and not 2nd. Very coarse.

My last two orders from of Oxbow Timothy Hay have been problematic. On both original orders the Timothy Hay was very bad quality (damp, musty, weedy, brown scruffy fuzzy stuff in it) and my guinea pig wouldn't eat it. Both times I requested a replacement. The replacements were better, but the hay still didn't seem fresh. It was more yellow than green with short strands and was dry. I'm not sure what is going on with the Oxbow hay. If it continues to be a problem, I'll have to look for a new brand. Chewy has been great with rectifying the problem and sending replacements quickly, but I'm very disappointed in the quality. I also find it suspicious that the Oxbow label with the Lot Number and Freshest By Date were covered over on the bad box. Was this done by Oxbow or Chewy?? Attaching pictures of the original bad box and replacement...

I hav e been using Oxbow Timothy Hay for my bunnies teeny plus years. The quality of the hay has deteriorated in the last year or so. In fact, about 50% of my recent purchases are so awful that I have not been able to use the entire bag or any of it at all. The hay that has been coming in the last 6 months has been more like 3rd cut consistency, does not smell like the hay from the past and has clumps of stringy hay. My rabbits have been know to push it right out of their hay boxes. I was getting auto ship for a while but had to concel it because of the inconsistency and lack of quality. by comparison I have tried purchasing from an alternate source. I have not seen this same problem. I may try purchasing here again but the other source is fast, does not make me buy a minimum amount for free ship and has been more consistent in quality. I continue to buy other products from Chewy but they need to look at what is happening to their supply of oxbow Timothy hay. it is very unfortunate and I have wasted enough money hoping it would get better.

The hay I bought this time is very coarse and yellow, and my guinea pigs don’t like it at all. There are also many seed-head pieces inside that look like wheat ears, which can easily cause bloating for guinea pigs. I’m very disappointed and will not purchase this brand again.

I have been feeding a mix of Oxbows Timothy hay and their Orchard grass to my girls for over 5 years now. I only have two girls, and live in an apartment, so buying the LARGE boxes is not really an option. And the smaller bags can rack up the expense pretty quickly. This 9lb size is PERFECT for our needs. (I usually buy one of each hay, and mix them into a plastic bin myself for feeding.) My girls go crazy for their hay, and having this size option is a really economical way to be able to give them the amount their little bodies and minds need and deserve, without breaking the bank! Plus, Oxbow hand sorts all of the packages of hay that are 9lbs and smaller. That offers me piece of mind, and more consistent quality. And I love that. If, for some (honestly, any) reason, the hay has not been up to my standards, or I have any issues, (which has only happened a handful of times) Chewy has always been wonderful about quickly sending out a replacement without any hassle! (And I have heard that Oxbow themselves will stand behind their product and do the same! But I personally have not gone this route myself.) Its great to know that the companies supplying my pets with the nourishment and enrichment their little bodies need care just as much as I do about the quality of their product, my animals health, and my pigs, and I's enjoyment and satisfaction! I can always be confident in what I'm getting when buying Oxbows products for my babies! Included is a picture of Harley (tan) and Kairi (Calico) thoroughly enjoying their hay! :)
