Is the string on this toy safe to eat? My rabbit keeps eating the string.
Answer by • May 11, 2020
The rope that is used to hold the apple stick hay feeder together is made of jute, a long, soft vegetable fiber that has been spun into a coarse, strong thread. Though Jute is non-toxic and is safe to be chewed on, and consumed in small quantities, it is not meant to be a food source as the material has very little, to no, nutritional value. Small pets such as rabbits will instinctively chew on hard and fibrous materials (just as they would in the wild), but they are not typically inclined to consume these non-nutritional materials. Generally speaking, they are so focused on chewing, they will only consume very small amounts. If the customer finds their rabbit is legitimately consuming significant quantities of the jute, we suggest removing the hay feeder from the enclosure and only providing it for use when her rabbit can be directly supervised. We also recommend removing the hay feeder from the enclosure once it starts to show signs of excessive wear and tear, or if her rabbit should ever chew on it to the point it falls apart.
