About This Item

Details

  • Oat Hay is companion forage that is similar in nutritional analysis to the western timothy. Your animals will love the immature oat grain that is contained in the seed head and will benefit greatly from the fiber in the leaf and stem.
  • Oat Hay is a good source of fiber and also gives variety to your animal's diet. This product also makes a good bedding alternative to wheat straw.
  • The stage of maturity at harvest determines the development of the seed head. If the hay is harvested immaturely, at the early bloom stage, the actual oat kernel is not mature. The seed heads consist primarily of oat husks, which are rich in fiber.
  • Hay is absolutely vital to the health of small herbivores. It provides not only nutrition, but environmental enrichment that mimics the animal's natural habitat.
  • Provides a long-strand fiber source that is needed to improve the digestive and intestinal functions by stimulating the digestive system. When animals are fed free-choice hay, it promotes their natural chewing behavior, which helps prevent molar spurs and other dental problems that are so common in these small herbivores.

Would Oxbow's Oat Hay be okay for my ratties? Besides the "poking their eyes out" myth, would this be okay for them to eat? Is it dusty? Thanks!

Unlimited timothy hay is recommended for guinea pigs. For young guinea pigs under the age of 4 months and pregnant or lactating mothers, alfalfa hay is also recommended.

DO NOT BUY

This stuff is awful! My piggies won't go near it and it literally looks like it's made of plastic! Horrid!

I only received one bag, not a “bundle of 3”

There is way too much inedible straw in with the oat hay

My Rabbits Like It

My adult rabbits normally eat 2nd cutting Timothy Hay but I occasionally buy Oxbow Oat Hay as a treat for them. They seem to like it and start eating it immediately

Not their favorite.

We have 15 rescue rabbits . I try different treats to add in the regular Timothy hay . This was not a favorite one for them. I would give it a try , your babies

Good supplemental hay

So far, this is the only variety of hay that I have not had bad bags of so I will keep my fingers crossed

Seems fine

My first test of oat hay. Certainly has the expected waxy texture. Doesn't smell like much and my rabbit doesn't like it as much as Timothy. Easier on my allergies,

Smelled fresh

This hay was very fresh and green when I opened it. I like to break up the variety for our guinea pigs and they love this.
