I have a Rottweiller German shepherd mix and she is a powerful puller! I got the head collar but she paws at it and lays down refusing to move. How long does it take for the dogs to accept wearing it? It is quite stressful for her and I right now.
Answer by ChewyNov 27, 2017
The adjustment process is different for all dogs, we recommend that during the first week of use you place the collar on during meal time immediately before and after feeding for them to get accustomed to the collar. Put the collar on your dog daily for about 3 minutes or less and while in the collar give the dog praise and treats to help them associate it with a positive action. From there, continue to repeat these steps and then try to take the dog on a 5 minute walk while giving praise and treats for a positive outcome.

some collars come with a padding that goes around the nose area, does this gentle leader have padding on it?
Answer by ChewySep 01, 2018
All PetSafe Premier Gentle Leaders now feature padding for the nose area. I've included an image for reference.

how do you tighten the nose piece
Answer by ChewyOct 05, 2022
To adjust the nose loop, snap the neck strap high on the neck at it's pre-fitted position. Make the final adjustment to the nose loop by sliding the snap clamp up or down to adjust. With your thumb and index finger, pinch nose loop underneath the snap clamp, temporarily holding it. For further instructions, click on the 'Instructions' tab, just under the product photos, where the 'User Manual' is located.

Making sure this comes with an instructional DVD ?

Complicated

We order the Gentle Leader on advice of our dog trainer. We just adopted an older rescure dog that really pulls. His strong pulling has cause me to fall several times. The instructions and pictures were wonderful but the whole process is extremely complicated with a # of steps. Using treats is part of the process of successfully getting the nose loop on the dog. However, our dog is not treat driven (not even using "high value treats") nor does he sit like the instructional photos show the dog doing. We have had the Gentle Leader for 3 weeks. Our dog has yet to wear the collar for even 3 minutes much less eat with it on.

So helpful

I'm a kidney dialysis patient with a fistula for treatment, making one arm fairly useless, and walking my young golden retriever was very difficult before we tried this. He does so much better now, though he figured out he could still pull a bit if he puts his head down and plows forward... Can always get him back on track, though. He does roll his head on the ground to try and get it off sometimes, but mostly, he seems just fine with it. I hold it up, and he sticks his nose right through the loop for me. It is starting to fray a bit on the nose, probably from the rubbing to try and get it off, but it is still sturdy. I test it before each use to be sure. Definitely recommend, especially if you have health issues that make walking your strong and hyper best friend difficult.

great collar for dogs that pull

i have tried everything for my dog Frank - standard harness, front harness and even a prong collar which worked but felt a bit 'too much' for me. Enter the head collar. It took a few days for Frank to adjust, this collar is the best thing we have used. He caught on very quickly, within 3 days. Today i was able to walk him on a long leash and there were no issues what so ever. If you are struggling to keep your dog from pulling, this collar will help you immeasurably. I highly recommend this product as it will save you from a sore arm and shoulder!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

After trying the Julius chest harness, the 2 hounds harness, and this gentle leader, the clear winner for us is this one. The Julius harness is great quality and fit, but pulling was an issue. We tried the 2 hounds one next hoping it would help. It was less comfortable and essentially looked like it could be a good training tool. While we have worked quite a lot on other training, leash training isn't one we have worked on. The gentle leader has been good right out the gate. She doesn't like not being able to pull and thus occasionally paws at this when she forgets and pulls but a "leave it" correction or sometimes gentle touch along with it and we are back to her walk. There is a guide as to how to start them off on it and honestly we didn't even do it since she was pretty good with it on her face right off the bat. I can see how it would help to do it their way getting the pet used to it, though. We were just in a time crunch. It is still a 10/10 for us though, it's definitely worth the money!

Not for Chewer

We were starting to make progress with my Aussie, but he was able to occasionally nip at the dangling part of the harness, and after about 4-5 walks was able to snap it off. Luckily, he minds well off leash, but if you have a serious chewer, I’m not sure how to avoid that.

Nope

My dog absolutely hated having this on. She constantly tried rubbing it off with her feet and by rolling. It was causing her way too much stress, and made our walks miserable. When she wasn't trying to rub it off, it did work better than a no pull harness, but there was still a little pulling.

Not made for smart dogs

Thank God for doubler leads, first walk my german shepard popped it off in under 5 min after sizing it to her face. 2nd time was 3 weeks later. The metal and the plastic she figured out how to pop with various maneuvers from back flops and general power lunges with 55lbs of weight. The product isn't made well enough to be used as only means of keeping dog leashed. I've never seen my dog pop a collar quite this easy and I've tried 6 different types of collars.

Great for Training for Strong Pullers

The Gentle Leader has been our go-to for training and re-training on walks with our Doberman Pinscher (and used on our German Shepherds as well). We alternate between this and the harness as we work on following verbal and visual commands.

Headcollar goes into dogs eyes

The headcollar is ok. I first used it on my 8 year old lab she pulled a little but stopped right away. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because when the dog pulls, the part that goes over the dogs snout, is pulled back into the eye that the owner is on. I didn’t like that at all.

Game changer

My little chiweenie pulled on lead like a sled dog competing in the Iditarod! For a 9 lb pup, she could really stretch my arm out. It took 2 days (6 walks and lots of treats) for her to get used to the gentle leader but now, she sits quietly waiting for me to put it on, and once outside, a quick little tug and she lets slack in the leash. Much better than the tugfest we used to have!
