Most cats adapt easily to ScoopFree boxes and use it within a week. If your cat needs help adjusting, try these tips:
Training Kittens
Kittens have a natural reflex to use the bathroom after eating, playing, or napping. Put your kitten in the litter box after these activities to help her associate the litter tray with the instinct.
**Indicator light is flashing rapidly, and rake is at home position.
**Indicator light is flashing rapidly (8 times per second), and rake is stopped several inches away from the home position.
**Indicator light is flashing medium (4 times per second), and system will not rake after the countdown time elapses.
**Magnets on waste trap cover do not attach to litter tray.
Litter box frame is not level on litter tray. The litter box should rest on the litter tray when installed, not on the floor. Make sure the litter box is completely level on the litter tray (see “Litter Tray Installation ” page 8).
Can ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box be used with multiple cats?
ScoopFree was designed for use with one or two cats. If you have more than two cats, it is recommended to have at least one litter box for every two cats.
Litter trays are 22” x 14-1/2” x 2-1/2”. ScoopFree Sensitive White Crystal Litter Trays do not include lids and can be nested, allowing them to be stored in a smaller space.
How big is ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box?
The ScoopFree litter bed measures 14” W x 15-1/2” L, and the exterior litter box dimensions are 19-1/8” W x 27-5/8” L x 6-3/8” H. The height is 16” with the optional hood installed (the Ultra comes with the privacy hood).
You should change the litter tray when either of the following occurs:
See “Maximizing Litter Tray Life” page 13 to help get the most life from the Disposable Crystal Litter Trays.
What if my cat goes back into the box soon after it’s been used?
The rake will not clean if a cat is in the litter box because it will be obstructing the detection sensors. The countdown timer will reset itself and the rake will begin to clean 20 minutes (or 5, 10, or 20 if you have ScoopFree Ultra) after your cat leaves the litter box again.
ScoopFree Ultra functions like the ScoopFree Original with three added features:

I have two of these boxes and I love them. I have arthritis and scooping is really a drag, this thing is a big help. I also got the permanent reusable tray and it's easy to clean and convenient. It saves me money because with 3 cats we go through litter often. But I agree with other reviewers that the petsafe crystals that come with it are terrible and don't last. They also track blue stuff everywhere. Tidy Cats Alert crystals work great in this thing and last for almost 50 uses with no smell, probably 2x the petsafe crystals. With 3 cats a fresh pour of litter in each box of the tidy cats lasts about 2.5 weeks, much better than scooping once or twice a day.
I purchased the auto box with hood. Male kitten started using on Oct.8th. at first his solid was to small and rake did not get. now its November the rake gets the solid. The urin does not clump. I still have to colect the solid ln the box once a day. Have got to spray the room twice a day . Stir the litter once a day. I have a fan that runs at least twice a day for smell. Great idea needs more work.
Love this box! We have used this box for 5 years. We change the crystals out every 2 weeks. Our cat took right to it even being a feral rescue. We have the privacy hood and haven’t had an issue with litter being flung or tracked around. He is a 14lb cat and doesn’t have a problem moving about inside the box. We don’t use the liners. That just seems like more plastic waste. Our kids chore is cleaning the box. They take it apart outside and clean it. As long as the rake is put back facing the right direction, it always functions properly. We have never had a malfunction or issue with it not cleaning. The box lets you know how many uses the cat has had so that you may judge when it is time to change the litter. We use the blue crystals and the work like a charm!
This litter box works well but if you have more than one cat I would recommend getting a second one. My kittens like to do their business at the same time and it's not big enough for both to go at the same time. I think it's because they are brother and sister. Lol. The only draw back is that the cleaning metal tines or comb does not go all the way to the bottom of the box which leaves some of the spent litter stuck to the bottom of the tray. Could just be my kittens like to dig a hole to the bottom, then go. It does work well otherwise.
I purchased this despite some of the reviews. In addition to the litter box I also purchased the pan instead of the throw away pans. Less waste in the landfills that way. It was a waste of money. The pan doesn’t work very well with the unit. It isn’t set up the same way as the disposable ones. It left the poo in the pan and not in the compartment. It was so bad that my cat ended up going on my sofa. That’s when I realized something was wrong so I checked the box and sure enough 5 days into this new bag of crystal litter and I had to change it again. It is expensive to have to replace this often. The purple crystals are a lot better for stopping the odor than the blue ones.
I've had the PetSafe self cleaning litter box since I got my first cat in 2017. My original finally died after 6 years. This replacement works the same, with a few newer features.
I bought this abought 6 months ago for my 12 yo cat. At first it was no problem. She took to it without difficulties. However I noticed the crystals were appearing about the house. As time went by it wasn't cleaning as well. I was having to change the litter more frequent up to 3x a month. That is too costly for someone on a fixed income. But then she quit pooping in the thing I quit. No I won't recommend it. What a waste of my money. So please save yours. Yes if you are wondering,I followed their instructions.
As someone who works a lot and is sometimes too worn out to clean a regular litter box, this has been super useful! The fact that it rakes itself after the sensor goes off is great, the litter doesn’t seem to track too much, and I don’t really mind buying refill trays since the litter lasts so long. I’m getting my money’s worth and I’ll never go back. Only downside is the size, really. If you have a small cat then its perfect, but my cat is about 15 pounds and its a bit difficult for her to push the litter around. So that means you should refrain from getting a hood for it since it would constrict even more space. Not a deal breaker, just a small inconvenience! I will say the price for 3 litter trays is a bit steep and it does keep me from wanting to buy the 3 pack.
I went through a bunch of automatic litter boxes because I hate cleaning them so much. All of them were awful. I really didn't want to spend a lot for an automatic box that wouldn't work and this was my last hope. When I found this one I was so excited! My cat loved it. It kept everything clean and my house didn't smell. When I got a second cat, I went out and bought another one of these awesome boxes. Again, keeps things clean and its super easy to change out the trays. One note, sometimes some of the poop gets stuck behind the rake and doesn't go into the trap. I just lift the box and move the poop in front of the rake (wearing a glove - ewww) and its gone next raking. I just got 3 kittens to add to my 2 adult cats. I'm buying 2 more of these because I can rely on this box to do what it is supposed to do.
This litter box is fairly close to perfection. We have one cat and we can get away with changing it once every 4 weeks. Full disclosure we also have other standard litter boxes in the house but she prefers this one and primarily uses it. We have the privacy hood as she kicks the litter far and wide- and it’s amazing at containing the mess. It just doesn’t stink until we get to week 4. I couldn’t be more impressed.
