For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
The fountain stopped working.
There are several possible causes for a fountain to stop working. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the motor to start pumping water once it’s refilled or plugged in. If water doesn’t flow after 5 minutes, try these troubleshooting tips:
Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function. Please refer to the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to properly clean your motor. To clean the motor:
Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
The motor is not working.
The water’s not flowing as much as it used to.
There’s black dirt in the bowl. This black stuff is loose activated carbon from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. The carbon filter is made of organic coconut shells. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this. Some filters may shed more carbon than others due to differing consistency of carbonl in each batch of filters, so don’t be surprised if some filters leave behind more carbon dust than others.

Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Which side of the filter should face the front? Put the filter in the filter housing with the black side facing the front.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

The directions are incomplete. The set-up instructions start with the device completely disassembled but it ships partially assembled and you have to disassemble it to clean it before use. The directions do not clearly explain how to remove the clips that hold the center cone down, which must be done to take it apart. They also do not clearly explain how to change the fountain rings/spouts. There are just a lot of things you have to figure out on your own, which takes extra time. The three clips that hold down the center cone and cover the pump cord are very difficult to manipulate so we only use two of them. This seems to be working OK for our purposes, but could be a problem if the fountain was being used by a pet that was a little more mischievous. When I purchased this device I was hoping it would be easier to take apart for cleaning and do a better job of filtering out particles that get into the water.
So, we've had this water fountain for about four+ months. It. Is. Horrible. Difficult to hand wash and I'd venture it'stoo big for the dishwasher = it's freaking huge! Our pump gave up, even with weekly cleanings and regular dump and rinses in between. We went a different version because Chewy was great about the bad pump. New one arrived and is beyond fantastic (other than it is plastic but not sure any other materials would work?).
I thought I had done my homework when buying this fountain, but it turns out this gives me never-ending headaches and I will soon be replacing it. First, the clips are hard to use and one of them broke pretty soon after buying it. Second, the sponge that came with it to hold the pump in place started disintegrating and Im convinced it partly lodged into the pump itself because any time I changed the water and turned it on, I would immediately get little particles floating around in the basin. I would have to dump and change the water multiple times waiting for it to finally be clean when I turned it on. Just a nightmare of a fountain, do not recommend.
Unfortunately the adjustable pressure option doesnt make a difference and doesnt evenly flow out. Much bigger and bulkier than expected with a short cord. And my cats played in it vs drinking from it. Will be shipping back . I was hoping for better quality with the cost as well.
I would have given this 4.5 stars if possible. We've had this fountain for 2 years and 4 months and are very happy with it. So much so that we're buying a second one. We haven't had any parts break and it assembles and disassembles easily. Cleaning it is a bit of a pain but not hard. I use the Drinkwell brushes and a pair of small cleaning brushes, but a toothbrush would do just as well. Pros: Cat likes it. He prefers the running water over stagnant. He has chronic kidney disease so he drinks A LOT and this helps him stay hydrated. The trickling water fountain sound can be relaxing if you like that sort of thing. Sturdy and seems well made. Pump is still going strong after 2+ years. Filters are easy to replace. Cons: After about two years we had some rust start on the cone shaped part where the water hits. However, this coincided with a move to a house on well water. It does get white water spots sometimes but soaking in a sink full of water with a bit of dish soap and a slug of vinegar can help. The flow of the fountain is not always consistent (sometimes it's more of a trickle) but I think the vinegar soak helps with this. Sometimes it does splash water onto the floor. I try to keep it on the lowest setting. Also, we are in the habit of checking the water level regularly but the fountain does hum when the water gets below the minimum line. We are getting a second one due to rust on the cone-shaped piece and decided to get the same model because then we will have spare parts to swap out if needed.
Love this Stainless water fountain. So do my cats, they seem to drink longer. Had the plastic one but seemed to need too much frequent cleaning. This one stays cleaner longer and easier to clean. Only complaint is the plastic clips. One broke when I tried to get it back together after cleaning. Maybe they can make a change on that design. Would buy again.
I would not recommend this fountain at all. It comes with 3 black plastic prongs to hold the middle part in place. One of mine broke a week into me having the fountain. There’s also no pressure pushing the water in the filter meant to remove dirt and hair, so there’s just dirty water sitting there if you don’t clean and replace it daily, which defeats the whole purpose of having the fountain. It’s also huge and a hassle to transport and clean. I will not buy this overly priced fountain again. Most other ones are much cheaper and do a much better job.
For the price, this is absolute garbage. I've owned multiple water fountains and decided to switch to a larger one for a multi-cat household. It's a pain to clean due to its size but I swear to god, this fountain gets dirty faster than a plastic fountain. Ultimately, the pump crapped out on me 4 months into owning the fountain which is laughable. I saw the other reviews with the same situation and figured they were one-offs but nope... apparently not.
We have 2 cats and they both drink out of the fountain. The sound of the water attracks them to the fountain. I love this fountain, I don't need to worry about the bowl being empty. A friend recommended this to me and I am so thankful.
This straightforward metal fountain completely changed my cats' drinking habits. The assembly is a little difficult to get right, but once it is set up it works a charm.
