For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
The fountain stopped working.
There are several possible causes for a fountain to stop working. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the motor to start pumping water once it’s refilled or plugged in. If water doesn’t flow after 5 minutes, try these troubleshooting tips:
Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function. Please refer to the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to properly clean your motor. To clean the motor:
Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
The motor is not working.
The water’s not flowing as much as it used to.
There’s black dirt in the bowl. This black stuff is loose activated carbon from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. The carbon filter is made of organic coconut shells. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this. Some filters may shed more carbon than others due to differing consistency of carbon in each batch of filters, so don’t be surprised if some filters leave behind more carbon dust than others.

Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Which side of the filter should face the front? Put the filter in the filter housing with the black side facing the front.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

I have owned many PetSafe fountains over the years. My cats do like to drink from them... when the water is clean. I was hoping that the Stainless Steel fountain would get less gunky and be easier to clean than the plastic fountains. I was wrong. It still grows gunky mold in the pump and crevices within a few days. My cats love it, but will not drink once it gets dirty. I find it hard to put back together and the plastic clips do not work well. Now I just leave them off. But having to clean the whole thing and replace the 2 filters every week seems to defeat the purpose of the fountain.
I have a Maine Coon mix, he is extremely strong and likes to pick up water bowls with his mouth and drop them. This is the only one that doesn’t allow this because it doesn’t have a lip and also is too heavy. feel a bit bad for the Chewy’s rep who helped me because I know this is a really odd problem but they came through like a champ! I do have to clean the whole thing once a week, I think my boys are messy but the filters last a few weeks and overall it isn’t too loud or disruptive.
This is the worst purchase I've ever made on chewy and I buy from them monthly. My cat is actually sick right now. If you look at the photo, that is the gunk that builds up in the filter after 1 day. I am cleaning this giant thing that weighs a lot. I have to change the water everyday. What's the point of having a fountain with a filter
We had a plastic fountain like this, years old, which finally developed a crack and leaked water, so we replaced it with the stainless steel version. This one is easier to clean, runs better, and the cats love it. They have really increased their water intake since we switched to running water fountains. Worth the price, and Chewy was very helpful in helping us get this when it was out of stock. Thanks, Chewy!
My cats love this fountain , but it needs to be clean weekly and the small plastic parts need to be clean with a q-tip and toothpick because it builds up gunk , and it builds it up weekly. Also I changed the water and use bottled water every other day and clean it weekly , it is mainly the small plastic parts and in the grooves that need to be clean , I assume it is mold that builds up and could make them sick
Prepare to replace the motor multiple times! I have replaced this motor 3 times, and now the plug has fallen apart. So now I can’t even replace the motor because the replacement part does not come with the plug bit. I clean this thoroughly once a week and it still breaks regularly.
I have had plastic water fountains in the past but they are impossible to keep clean. Clean water for cats encourages them to drink more, which can help prevent some urinary infection, This purchase is perfect. Easy to clean throughly or just to rinse out daily. Very happy.
The item is much larger than the bowl pictured. My cats are not small, but the bowl is too high for them; and it is too wide for them to reach the flowing water, either. Despite the blurb, it is suitable only for dogs, not cats. I concur with the other reviews: the instructions are incomplete and misleading. We had an earlier model Drinkwell that worked well for 20 years. This was a waste of time and money.
My animals do drink more water and it’s got a relaxing sound to it. It’s well made, goes together very solidly, and the metal doesn’t have any sharp edges or defects on mine. BUT, if the carbon filter is a big deal to you like it was me, choose something else. This one is just for show essentially. There is a gap around it inside the tube you put it in. The water takes the path of least resistance and just goes around. I put an O-Ring around it to seal that gap and now the water barely flows, the pump is clearly not designed for the extra resistance that the water actually flowing through the filter created. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money on the carbon filter refills and just use the foam one around the pump, that one is very effective. I’m honestly disappointed in myself for taking this long to notice. I haven’t tried it with the tube completely empty but you may still need a filler to take advantage of the Venturi Effect and get desired water pressure. The pump just doesn’t seem very strong.
Got new cat (Milo) who wasn't drinking from bowl, but is now drinking from fountain. YAY! As a technophobe, assembling it was a bit of a challenge, but I managed.
