do you have to use crystal litter or can u use clay

Answer by PennyJul 16, 2023
i believe you can use any litter.

Does the litter stick to the cat's paws and end up on the floor around the litter box?

Answer by ChewyMar 30, 2019
This litter box features low-tracking and 99% dust-free crystals that won’t stick to kitty’s paws so your home stays clean and litter-free.

How often do you need to change the crystal litter?

Answer by ChewyNov 17, 2020
You should change the litter tray when the crystal litter is saturated or when the waste trap is full. As the crystals absorb urine, the litter will start to turn yellow. Once the majority of the litter turns yellow, the crystals are nearing their saturation point. When the crystals can no longer absorb any more moisture, you may start to notice an odor from the urine. When the waste trap is full, the waste trap cover will not close completely. You may see small pieces of solid waste sticking out from underneath the lid. You may also start to notice an odor from the solid waste.

Does the hood come with this product?

Answer by ChewyApr 10, 2020
This litter box does not include the privacy hood. However, it is available separately for purchase by using the Chewy search feature and searching for "The ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box Privacy Hood".

Even though I had this litter box hidden in a closet with the door anchored to only open wide enough for my cat, my daughter’s dog managed to open the door and ate crystals. Unfortunately the dog died two days later. Calling the company and complaining that their name was even inappropriate, Safepet, they stated that the name is just a name and that it was my fault for allowing a dog to eat unsafe consumption of the crystals. My bad, right? I assumed that SAFEPET was a safe pet product!! I was dead wrong. Such a sad story. Years later, we still miss our dog and there was nothing the company did to make us feel any comfort. They actually pointed blame. Horrible company. Horrible and deadly product. Don’t purchase!

i’m allergic to cats and have a hard time with traditional clumping litters. i’ve used the petsafe self cleaning litter box with three different cats and have never had an issue. i find the crystals do track but nothing a nice mat in front or daily vacuuming can’t fix. the litter is costly but i find it has minimal dust and we don’t notice a smell until it’s time to be changed. we have one box for two male cats and go thru a tray in about 2.5 weeks. could last a month with one cat. to save money we pair it with stainless steel tray and autoship bags of the litter instead of buying the premade trays. definitely an investment but worth it!

It’s a great litter box. It’s quiet and cleans itself really well. My cat just didn’t like the crystal litter because he’s a little prince. I will say that if your cat likes to pee in the same spot every time then you will need to stir the litter around every day or two so it doesn’t all clump together in one spot.

When the rake is grating the cat litter to deposit the waste for some reason it brings back some poop and the crystals do not fall out through the grater. It backs up to the front of the box. So, I have to go in and run the grater to get the scrape the crystals back out in the tray so my cats have something to scratch when using it. Very dissatisfied with this litter box.

2.5 Years of PetSafe ScoopFree

TLDR: This is a good self-scooping litter box without all the bells and whistles. What you don't pay in the upfront cost, you'll pay in spades for replacement trays over the life of the box. Likely best suited for a home with 1-2 cats. No issues for two years with first litter box. Second purchase lasted five months. I have four cats and at the time I bought my first PetSafe self-scooper (early 2023), they were indoor-outdoor cats who only did their business indoors about half the time. By mid-2024 I had transitioned them to be indoor-only cats who do their business indoors 100% of the time. It's a good litter box. It does what I need it to. I like that I don't have to scoop daily (multiple times daily) or do litter changes or wash the litter box. Just throw the whole cardboard thing away and move on with my day. Good deal, right? With four indoor cats and one litter box, that tray replacement is required twice a week ("required" meaning they will be pooping on the floor if you don't do something pronto). A three pack of tray replacements on average costs about $65. With 52 weeks in a year and two replacements a week over the past year, that totals out to about $2,250 that I've spent in the past 12 months on replacement trays and litter. Compare that to other (more expensive upfront) self-scooping litter boxes where all you need to buy is generic clumping litter and trash bags for the waste tray, and the cost drops down to about $1,000 a year (more if you buy their custom waste tray liners). I've had issues twice with the PetSafe self-scooper. The first time was in February 2025, nearly two years after I first bought it. A piece of the plastic poop flap broke off and it could no longer lift the flap to scoop the poop into the containment zone. Annoying but not a bad run. I bought a new one. Now (August 2025) it's having electrical issues. Both ends of the power cord are plugged snug into their sockets, nothing has gotten wet, the cats haven't been trying to bury the cord in the litter box (if you don't get the top cover you'll have to watch out for that/keep it tucked under the plastic housing so they can't get it), but the display keeps randomly going dark and then it doesn't scoop. It's been happening for a couple weeks and until today I could unplug it and plug it back in and it would turn on and stay on (for a time). This morning that didn't work. There's a 12-month standard warranty so I plan to call the number and see what they can do for me and my five month old litter box, but I'm planning to switch to a cheaper (in the long run) alternative anyway. This box worked great (while it worked). It kept me sane. It let me love my cats without the irritation of constant litter box maintenance. Its lack of intimidating globe spinner contraption and $600 price tag got me into the automated litter box space without the heartburn of spending a ton on a complicated machine I didn't understand. It served its purpose and while I don't think I can recommend it for households with more than two cats (just because of the ongoing cost), I do think it's a solid choice for those looking for a simple solution to scooping.

Love the fact that I don’t have to clean the box daily, however, the gravel is spread on the floor after the cats finish their business .

Best for only one cat

We got this litter box for our two cats thinking it would work better than a traditional one. We had hope that this wouldn’t need changed out more than once a week

We got this litter box for our two cats thinking it would work better than a traditional one. We had hope that this wouldn’t need changed out more than once a week but it starts to reek so quickly. It only last about three days before most of the house smells like cat pee and poop. Also the litter trays are so expensive. It’s not truly worth it in the long run.
