Do you need to use the filters with the fountain? I will not be using our tap water.

The filter is not necessary for the fountain's function. It will run normally without the filter. The filters are designed to help remove pet hair, saliva and unpleasant tastes from the water.

This fountain does not turn off when the water level is low. The pump is designed to work in at least one inch of water. The pump can fail if it runs dry.

A must buy for all pet parents.

This is probably my third watering bowl. My first, was the catit water fountain. I got rid of it due to the fact that my cat tips it over. second, was just a plain ceramic bowl. Because, I got tired of my cat tipping her water bowl over. Third, was this one and it works like a charm. It lays flat on the floor, heavy, the water flows from the center. I noticed my cat likes to do circles around her water bowl and if the flow isn't facing her she'll turn the bowl to the side. So, yes this did fix my problem with water fountains.

I’ve had this fountain for over a year. Had to replace the pump once, it died on me after i was aggressively cleaning and digging around where the cord connected

I’ve had this fountain for over a year. Had to replace the pump once, it died on me after i was aggressively cleaning and digging around where the cord connected when washing it. Overall I think it’s a great product. You have to commit to cleaning it every two weeks though. I think a lot of complaints are linked to that- there just isn’t anyway around that. After two weeks bacteria builds up. I stopped using the carbon filters and I saved a lot of money by buying aquarium tank filter sponge (which is what the filters are made out of) and cutting them into the shape needed. Cleaning tips- Sometimes I soak the metal parts in warm water, a little white vinegar (natural disinfectant) and a drop of dish soap. Just make sure you are rinsing it really thoroughly! I also soak and wash the filter sponge and rinse that really really well. it can last me two months before I have to replace it. I use a gentle bristle brush and straw cleaning tools to clean nooks and crannies, especially on the smaller pieces. I just read that the metal parts can be cleaned on the top shelf dishwasher and I think I will try that too.

gets gross fast

i liked this at first due to the minimal plastic and design, but for some reason (as echoed by other reviews) it gets slimy and gross super fast. within a week

i liked this at first due to the minimal plastic and design, but for some reason (as echoed by other reviews) it gets slimy and gross super fast. within a week or so of beginning to use it i noticed this. i occasionally would take every piece apart and clean it out before refilling it. eventually i noticed that the filter was growing some kind of brown slime creature and could not be cleaned. i ended up throwing it away and using it without the filter. the thin sponge filter that encircles the pump also broke while trying to clean it. i realize they sell replacement filters, but you would have to replace them constantly and throw away more plastic than if you just bought a plastic fountain. i stopped using this because i worried my cat would get sick (or more specifically, that his health issues were partly caused by it). my previous plastic fountain had a simple sponge physical filter in front of the intake, and a cleanable flat charcoal filter where the water is pushed out, and it never had this problem in years of using it.

Works great and both the cats use it, but like all fountains of any design, without a dishwasher it's a bit of a pain to clean - and really needs to be cleaned weekly

Contrary to some of the reviews, this fountain is super easy to clean and the pump absolutely does come apart. It’s easy to put back together too. I use a pipe cleaner, toothbrush and a bottle brush and am able to reach every part of the fountain. I’ve owned the stainless steel and ceramic versions for years now and my cats love them. You can buy replacement pumps if needed. I have no problem with any slime buildup because I thoroughly clean it once a week.

Manufacturer's shortcomings

Due to complicated health issues, I did not open the package until today. I put all the pieces together according to instructions only to find a key component missing. Since a return at this point is not feasible, what I have is a very expensive water bowl. This is a lack of quality control on the part of the manufacturer, PETSAFE, and I will be sure not to purchase any of their products in the future.

I have had a Catmate plastic water fountain for years. I found it quite a pain to clean, and it would leave residue that wouldn't scrub off. I read an article about how bacteria can stay in plastic and cause health problems for your pet. Our one cat constantly threw up, and no food would change his condition. So, I decided to search for a stainless steel fountain and settled on the one from PetSafe. So far, it is easy to clean and our puky boy has stopped throwing up as much, unless it's a hairball, and drinks lots of water. Well worth the investment.

It’s not easy to clean where it matters: the pump! I purchased this at the end of June. It worked well enough until about a month ago. I noticed that, after cleaning the bowl (an every other day routine), it wouldn’t start. Eventually it started during the next day or so and then I noticed that there was a black gel-like substance stuck in the filter, with another chunk potentially stuck in the pump. I cleaned it out and replaced the filter (a monthly routine) and it still didn’t start as soon as it was plugged in and it I literally just attempted to clean out the bowl again to fill with fresh water, and noticed that there was black slime oozing out the side of the pump. The pump is not able to be disassembled so there is no way of cleaning out whatever is in there and I refuse to let my cats to use this bowl again. Do not buy this. Do not buy this.
