An alternative for a cat with urinary tract issues

Buzz has a complicated health history. I fostered him for a local shelter since he was about a week old. It was obvious that he had difficulty urinating and I immediately took him to my veterinarian to be evaluated. As it turned out, his penis was trapped inside his abdomen, requiring immediate surgery so that the urine could properly drain outside his abdomen. He needed a second surgery a few weeks later to make the correction permanent. But the entrapment and lack of proper draining of urine, even for the short period of time, damaged his kidneys, and created scar tissue inside his penis which had to be broken up with a series of catheters and flushed out. He is prone to urinary tract infections or blockages. Specially formulated diets often are recommended and can substantially reduce and even prevent future problems. These diets can be either prescribed and expensive foods, or specially formulated foods that do not require a prescription. I opted for the non-prescription and more modestly (though certainly not inexpensive) priced food. I did also choose to eliminate all dry kibble (regardless of formulation) from his diet. Buzz has experienced only one urinary tract infection in the past 5 years, which I am certain reflects my caution.

I’ve tried multiple prescription urinary tract cat foods but my cat refuses to eat them and they cost more! Kitty loves this food and it works to prevent urinary infections. He’s been eating Purina Pro Urinary tract catfood exclusively now for over 5 years and hasn’t had another urinary infection since he’s been on it. Thanks!!!!

Normally five stars. We order this regularly for our cats, and they seem to enjoy it. We appreciate the urinary tract benefits especially. We are accustomed to the occasional dented can or cans, but we got one that was split open, leaking and spoiled. It smelled worse than normal (it is fish after all!). The damage was such that we were shocked it was the only affected can. So, we only had 23 useable cans, which is a bummer, because this is not cheap!! Unfortunately we do not have camera phones (flip phones for us!) so we have no photo, but it looked like it was hit with an axe handle (which I doubt was what happened). I'm sure that it happened in transit, because I can't imagine Chewy would send out a split can.

Less portions then there used to be

My Cat loves this food and it's been awhile since i've ordered it. I opened a few cans up so far and I've noticed that the portion sizes are less despite the packaging

A new rescue developed FIC while I was trying to introduce him to my other cats. He had to go to emergency and later to my regular vet to get a prescription for Hills. As you probably know, emergency care costs are incredibly high so I'm now feeding my other cats this Purina formula just to be safe, they all love the taste of the fish version, my next delivery will be the chicken version. Between 2 of my cats, I've had to go to emergency 3 times for FIC and megacolon, two life-threatening occurrences, the cost was astronomical. I'm doing what i can to prevent trouble before it happens.

Neither cat likes it.

It's very smelly and I have to mix other food with it for my cats to eat. They much prefer Dave's and you're out of stock

Cat likes this food.

Abby was diagnosed with crystals in her bladder, not uncommon at her age, 16. Vet prescribed urinary tract food, but despite trying 6 prescription wet food varieties

Abby was diagnosed with crystals in her bladder, not uncommon at her age, 16. Vet prescribed urinary tract food, but despite trying 6 prescription wet food varieties including Purina Pro Plan UR, she wouldn’t touch any of them. Mostly just sniffed and walked away. This non-prescription variety seems fairly close to the UR food and she cleans her bowl. Can’t ask for much more. Maybe the prescription version is slightly better for her, but is of no use if she won’t touch it. I’d recommend trying this one if you’re in a similar situation.

My vet recommended that I feed a wet food to my cat that has urinary tract difficulty. While infection is not usually a factor, discomfort is. I have fed several kinds that support urinary tract health. Purina ProPlan seems to be the preferred brand. I like that he likes it.. Ocean whitefish is his fav, followed by the salmon. I have noticed that his urine output has improved and frequency has lessened. The condition has not gone away, but I think it has helped.
