Questions & Answers

7 Customer Questions

Which country are the ingredients sourced from?
Answer by ChewyMar 13, 2022
Of all Purina pet food products sold in the USA, 99% are made in the USA. The vast majority of ingredients used in Purina products made in the U.S. are sourced here in the U.S. Like other food companies, Purina does source a limited amount of ingredients from other countries, including China. These ingredients are primarily essential nutrients, such as taurine and B vitamins that are not commonly available in the U.S. in the quantities we need. Purina ensures that all of the ingredients they use meet the same high-quality standards. This includes ingredients we source from China.

What specific animal(s) is the liver in this food sourced from?
Answer by ChewySep 16, 2021
The liver is sourced from cattle, swine or poultry. When product has beef in the formula or product description, the liver is beef liver. When beef is not in the formula or product descriptor, the liver is pork or poultry liver.

What is the added color?
Answer by ChewyAug 23, 2021
The artificial coloring is sometimes added to maintain a more desirable and consistent appearance. Small amounts of dyes are used to produce the color. All coloring (natural and artificial) commonly used in Purina formulas have been recognized as safe by the FDA for use in both human foods and pet foods.

What happened to this food?

My dog has been eating Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Beef and Rice chunks for several years and I've always been impressed with the appearance and the nutritional value of this food. However, now it seems like there is half as many chunks and twice the amount of gravy. I think Purina screwed up a good thing! Sadly, I'll be looking for an alternative as I don't feel we're getting our money's worth.

Add in for kibble

I have EXTREMELY picky dogs and adding this to their kibble has helped. While they liked this at first, they did get bored of it. They prefer the gravy and meat chucks over this. I do recommend giving it a try for a picky eater.

Purina Is Pathetic

The fact that Purina insists upon ignoring consumer trends and keeping unnecessary ingredients like added color in its foods defies all logic. They use unnamed liver and unnamed meat by-products in what is supposed to be their premium line of food (Pro Plan) to improve their profit margins. How hard is it to leave out worthless ingredients or commit to named proteins? Especially when consumers are paying for your most "premium" line of product? You can't skim enough profit off of a product made with beef alone? You have to cut it with chicken and screw over anyone looking to avoid the most common food allergen? I understand that Purina conducts feeding trials and studies that veterinarians love, and that their Pro Plan products are often (slightly) above average in terms of quality, but they are supremely overrated as a brand across the board. I'm a vet tech and I pass on their products frequently because there are numerous competitors that seem to actually care about what educated consumers want in their pet food and offer products of a quality that matches their price tag.

Food used to be Focus by Purina. Now Just Pro plan, and different. Was dark brown beef bits in dark gravy, now light beige and gummy looking. Chewy website showed can as Focus. Causes intense gas she never had before. one star only for Chewy, zero for Purina.

Product change

FYI only - Used to be Purina Pro Focus with a darker meat product in dark 'gravy/sauce'. This is not the same product.

Good Product

My dogs enjoy this which I add to their dry food. They are healthier because I make this choice for them. I recommend this product to others.

Good, but why "large breed"?

I thought "large breed" meant bigger chunks, but when I compared it to my usual Purina Pro Plan foods, the pieces were about the same size. Perhaps it's in the nutritional content, but calories look to be about the same. Either way, Purina has good quality for my Danes, so we'll continue to include this in our rotation.
