Worried About Your Dog’s Skin Health?

Skin health concerns are common and can appear anywhere on your dog’s body. Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog’s health, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best solutions for your pet. This specialized expertise is why Royal Canin works closely with veterinarians to develop formulas that support skin health.

Common Causes of Skin Health Concerns

Environmental Sensitivities

Pollen, plants and dust are environmental factors that can trigger an immune response in some dogs.

Food Sensitivities

Your veterinarian may recommend a diet elimination trial to help determine if your pet has a sensitivity to certain proteins in his current diet.

Parasites

Your dog can pick up external parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks and lice from contaminated sources, both indoors and out

Infection

Puppies, older dogs, and dogs that have recently been ill may be more susceptible to bacterial infections that can lead to skin health concerns.

How Can Nutrition Help?

Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin Dermatology formula for your dog. These special formulations can:

Support digestive health by regulating movement through the GI tract and supporting balanced digestive flora

Support the skin’s natural protective barrier

Aid cellular health with a complex blend of antioxidants.

Promote healthy skin and coat by providing long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the diet

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

Helps with allergies but too big will have to switch due to kibble size

Helped with allergies, but kibble is huge even for large breed. Kibble is thick and size of mentos (dogs are around 80 pounds) and still too big. Wish they made same recipe in a medium and small size kibble. If you have a toy breed or small dog no way you can feed this kibble. Pros is not soy in the ingredients. I wish the rabbit and duck option did not have soy!

This has been a game changer! My 165-lb Bernese Mountain Dog lost 35 pounds to GI disease over the course of one year. Various meds and diet regimens brought virtually no relief (lamb was promising, but he reverted to watery stools after 4 weeks). The low fat white fish diet seems to be the trick. Finally, solid poos - yay! He's gaining weight back slowly, and is getting a bounce back in his step. We alternate between SquarePet and Royal Canin kibble (so he doesn't get bored and we don't go broke), and give him his meds wrapped inside SquarePet canned food. I do believe SquarePet and Royal Canin -- and Chewy, and our heaven-sent vet GI specialist -- are helping to save my lovely boy's life.

My boy needs a larger kibble and it’s almost impossible to find a prescription diet for skin/GI issues that is suited for a giant dog. I was happy to find this and he seems to like it. My only wish was there would also be a wet canned version to pair with the food. He’s a dog that likes dry/wet mix. I know I can pair with the RC HA canned but that food made him sick. Make a wet version like you have for the PR and we would be very happy.

Great for my Bernese!

My Berber has food allergies and gets frequent upset tummy. Compared to what I was buying him this is cheap! Coat is thick and glossy and eyes clear.

Expensive but working well!

My Airedale has not been formally diagnosed with allergies, but from a young age he would have off-and-on issues with either soft stools or itchy skin/folliculitis

My Airedale has not been formally diagnosed with allergies, but from a young age he would have off-and-on issues with either soft stools or itchy skin/folliculitis. It's also important to me that my dogs are eating a well researched, well balanced diet due to concerns for the rise in nutritional DCM from poorly formulated pet foods. We figured out he did best on a fish based diet and avoiding beef/chicken, so my vet had him on Royal Canin's Skin Support prescription food (fish/rice). Digestively he did very well on it, but he would still occasionally get a folliculitis flare up on his belly, although the itchiness and skin issues were much improved... I still had him on Zyrtec daily and occasionally a cytopoint shot when he seemed extra itchy. And he seemed to be getting a little bored of it. Then Royal Canin recently discontinued the Skin Support formula... I did not want to switch to an untested food, but there weren't many options. This food was the closest approximation to what he was eating -- just fish/potato instead of fish/rice. After transitioning, he has done fantastic on this food! Digestion is firm, small and regular. He eats it enthusiastically. I like that it has extra joint support ingredients for large breed dogs (he's about 60lbs and very active). Best of all, his skin looks perfect and he's not had ANY folliculitus breakouts since switching, reduced itching, and he's off zyrtec and has not required another cytopoint shot. I wish it was less expensive, but it's working well for him!
