How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants
Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

worked great
By Bubbsmom on Sep 26, 2020
Food is great, and easy to change over from other food! Had no problem, vet said to just use it at next feeding no need to do it gradually. No problems! soaked it in water and smashed up, as my dog doesn't chew. Food seemed to help, however now that her main problem has been diagnosed, have changed once more, but to a cheaper food. Would totally recommend this! Keeping left over in case I have to change food again.

Amazing amazing amazing.
By Bosco on May 16, 2020
Both Royal Canin and Chewy are amazing. Great service. 5 Star all the way! I have a 3 year old Havanese. He developed a bad skin disease. Very dry skin, sores, and he shedded almost 1/2 of his coat. We did test after test all negative. He was put onto 2 doses of antibiotics that lasted 28 days. To keep him free of any future problems I put him on Royal Canin veterinary diet. I’ve tried the soy protein but that caused different problems so he’s been on potato & whitefish for a few weeks. I’m using Pet Wellbeing itch support & their Omega 3 plus Zymox products. I have to say I’m seeing good results. No sores, no dry flaky skin and his fur has just started to grow.

Saved my puppy!
By Krissyb on Jun 10, 2020
My Frenchie was on another prescribed food but developed an allergy and was covered in hives. She was at the vet twice on steroids before we determined the food to be the source of the issue. She had been on that food for months before her breakout occurred. This food has been a life saver.

Great product for a peaky bulldog eater with poultry allergies
By Mika on Jun 11, 2020
My bulldog has severe allergies to all poultry products and even traces of the poultry in the food. Since the KO diet was discontinued (Kangaroo protein), we had to look for the alternatives and found the White Fish/Potato combo that he loved and worked really well for the transition.

By Chloesmom on Jun 11, 2020
Her bowel is improved, but her appetite is still decreased. She seems okay with her allergies, too.

Vet suggested
By Wags on Nov 14, 2019
My dog has become such a picky eater at 9 years old that my vet suggested that I try this brand. She has had other dogs who were picky eaters and they actually like this expensive brand of food. My dog wouldn't even sniff it! What a huge waste of money. Besides this, I was disappointed that the chewy online application didn't give me a message letting me know that I already had a bag of this in my cart and now I am stuck with two bags of this dog food that cannot be returned. What a let-down!
