Worried About Your Dog’s Skin Health?

Skin health concerns are common and can appear anywhere on your dog’s body. Your veterinarian is the expert on your dog’s health, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best solutions for your pet. This specialized expertise is why Royal Canin works closely with veterinarians to develop formulas that support skin health.

Common Causes of Skin Health Concerns

Environmental Sensitivities

Pollen, plants and dust are environmental factors that can trigger an immune response in some dogs.

Food Sensitivities

Your veterinarian may recommend a diet elimination trial to help determine if your pet has a sensitivity to certain proteins in his current diet.

Parasites

Your dog can pick up external parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks and lice from contaminated sources, both indoors and out

Infection

Puppies, older dogs, and dogs that have recently been ill may be more susceptible to bacterial infections that can lead to skin health concerns.

How Can Nutrition Help?

Your veterinarian may recommend a Royal Canin Dermatology formula for your dog. These special formulations can:

Support digestive health by regulating movement through the GI tract and supporting balanced digestive flora

Support the skin’s natural protective barrier

Aid cellular health with a complex blend of antioxidants.

Promote healthy skin and coat by providing long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the diet

Find The Perfect Balance

With a dry and wet feeding routine, dry food supports positive oral health while wet food supports healthy hydration.

Is the Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein considered low fat

Why is there carrageenan in a food for dogs with GI issues?

Answer by ChewyDec 24, 2025
"Carrageenan is a greatly misunderstood ingredient. The FDA and AAFCO recognize carrageenan as an acceptable ingredient to be used in pet food. The carrageenan in Royal Canin canned products is a carbohydrate used as a thickening agent to maintain the texture of canned products. The perception that carrageenan is inflammatory is due to distortion of facts. A certain form of carrageenan, referred to as “degraded carrageenan”, fed at sufficiently high levels can induce intestinal inflammation and this is used for an experimental model of IBD in rats. The attached paper helps explain the difference between degraded carrageenan or poligeenan and food grade carrageenan. Food grade carrageenan is NOT converted to poligeenan during processing or digestion, so there is no natural conversion."

What is the texture of this food? I opened a can I purchased from my vet and was surprised that I needed to scrape it out of the can like hard ice cream.

Answer by ChewyMar 27, 2019
This texture of this food is a pate.

How do I store the left over canned dog food? My dog is very tiny so 1 can will go a long way

Answer by ChewySep 18, 2020
Canned, wet diets, once opened, need to be covered and refrigerated in a sealed plastic or ceramic container. If your pet doesn’t like cold food, try warming it to room temperature before feeding. (please note: if you use a microwave put the product in an appropriate microwave-safe container and always check the temperature before feeding).

My GSD has allergies and chronic dermatitis. My vet recommended trying a strict limited ingredient diet, such as Royal Canin, and after awhile test for food allergies. My dog eats their kibble but will not touch the canned food. After discarding bowls of this food every night, I no longer offer it. I must confess, he use to get home cooked meals with either salmon or chicken as the protein, so this product probably couldn't compete.

The delivery person did not drop my package off at my door. I live in apt complex and had to go look for my package. I found the package in front of a door that had no unit #. My shipping address has my unit#708. This is unacceptable because I count on my package to be delivered to my door. Thankfully it was in my building, next time it could end up at another building that I would not know about.

I've been ordering this to supplement the dry royal cabin hydrolyzed protein dog food for years. I use the canned version to give oral medications. This recent 24 pack I ordered is off. Its dryer and smells bland- for comparison, there usually is a strong meaty/dog food type of smell that entices my dog to eat and stinks up the house a bit during mealtimes. He's not interested in food which is unlike him- in 12 years he's never missed a meal. I'm going to rehydrate his dry food in the meantime and try the potato rabbit version.

Sophie likes it because of the taste and I like it because it doesn’t have all those black spots in it that purina HA chicken flavor moist food has. I was throwing out most of the purina moist food. The company said it was ok to feed it to her. I’m not going to feed her food that has black in it that looks like mold. I’m going to see if royal canin has a dry hydrolyzed food I can switch to. Now she eats Purina dry but as we get to the end of the bag. She doesn’t want to eat it anymore. I keep it in an air tight container so I know that’s not the problem. I find myself throwing out a lot of expensive Purina HA food. I’m going to switch to Royal Canin on my next order.

My dog would not eat this food. I tried to feed this to her directly from the can, and then by adding small amount of water and mashing the food up. She refused to eat the food after licking it twice, and the spit it out. I ended up throwing out several entire cans of food after she refused to eat it.

Although my Newf isn't in love with this food, it's a necessary part of her diet. Our vet encouraged us to use the online pharmacy for ordering. They assured me this service was expedient. After not one, but two "deliveries" that did not arrive when claimed they were, their customer service response was lackluster. I requested a Rx ASAP from my vet explaining the issue and had it sent to Chewy. She got spoiled with some homemade food for a couple days, but this arrived as expected, without any issues. Thanks, Chewy!
