About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Cats

Acute or chronic? If your Veterinarian thinks your pet has a gastrointestinal issue, they may classify it as acute or chronic. Acute conditions appear suddenly and deteriorate rapidly. Chronic conditions develop over time and may worsen gradually.

Worried About Your Cat’s Digestion?

Your cat’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your cat, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Cat’s GI System

  1. Mouth: where ingestion of hair and formation of hairballs can occur, due to frequent grooming.
  2. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  3. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion.
  4. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  5. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  6. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

Answer by ChewyJul 20, 2019
Gastrointestinal High Energy Canned Food is a palatable, digestible diet that supports digestive health for cats with gastrointestinal sensitivities. Due to your pet's medical condition, we encourage consulting your veterinarian to see what diet would be safe for them.

Can unused portions of the gastrointestinal pate be frozen?

Answer by ChewyOct 14, 2022
It is not recommended to freeze this canned food as mold can form when taken out of the freezer. We recommend covering the can and putting it in the fridge. Refrigerating them would make these cans last up to 48 hours.

Brown residue on the bottom of the cans.

My 16 y.o. cat started having consistent diarrhea. I started looking for the food that would help with that. I chose this one. It actually helped with her bowel movements, but I have to dilute the paste with warm water for her to eat. When mushing the food with a fork, I had noticed some brown particles inside. Then I looked in the can and found the brown stuff on the bottom. I gave a try to 2 more cans, then contained Chewy. I sent them photos of empty cans. I was told, this could have been a bad batch, and they will send a replacement, and I will have to send the bad food back. There was still 19 cans left. A week past by, and there was no indication of a new box being mailed. I called Chewy, and I had been told that they will send me another box, when they receive the old one. Wow! They didn’t trust that I will send them the bad food backl But I simply didn’t have a box to mail it in. So, the representative then said, I have an option to purchase another box of food, then use that box to mail the old food, then get a refund. And that what I did. When the new ox came, I examined the first can inside thoroughly, it was okay. But in the second I found the same brown residue on the bottom! This time I don’t feel like contacting Chewy again, and I decided to write my experience openly to the public. No, I don’t want another replacement of this food. And I will try find a box to send this back. The last think I want for my 16 y.o. Cat to get sick! P.S. the photos are of the new cans.

I switched my senior cat Scotty to this wet food at our vet’s recommendation and he’s thrown up so much less than he had been - he has chronic pancreatitis. I’m very glad that at least for now just this one change is helping so much and it’s about the same price as his previous wet food. Also it must taste delicious because Scotty is feral for it! I will say it’s a little less wet than other wet foods we’ve tried, but I often add a splash of pet-specific chicken broth as a topper anyway.

Didn't help cat's tummy

Unfortunately this diet didn't help with my cat's IBD at all. After I switched to hydro protein dry food, she stopped even sniffing this one.

Cats didn’t like the taste

Bought for my cat who was put on this food by the vet. One cat (who wasn’t on prescription food) loved it, but the one who has IBD did not :(
