About Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Health For Cats

Acute or chronic? If your Veterinarian thinks your pet has a gastrointestinal issue, they may classify it as acute or chronic. Acute conditions appear suddenly and deteriorate rapidly. Chronic conditions develop over time and may worsen gradually.

Worried About Your Cat’s Digestion?

Your cat’s gastrointestinal (GI) system helps support the rest of the body by properly digesting food and making sure to extract the nutrients needed for overall health. Your veterinarian is the expert on your cat, so you should always consult with this trusted advisor to find the best gastrointestinal health solutions and management options for your pet.

Know Your Cat’s GI System

  1. Mouth: where ingestion of hair and formation of hairballs can occur, due to frequent grooming.
  2. Stomach: the first part of the GI tract, where inflamation may lead to vomitting.
  3. Small Intestine and Pancreas: where the small intestine is responsible for absorption of nutrients within the diet and the pancreas aids in digestion.
  4. Large Colon (Tranverse): which is responsible for forming stool.
  5. Large Colon (Descending): which is responsible for forming stool; any alteration to this process may lead to constipation or diarrhea.
  6. Rectum: where stool leaves the body

How Nutrition Can Help

What is the calorie count per can?

Answer by ChewyFeb 25, 2019
This food contains 60 calories, per 3 ounce can.

How does this differ from the Digeat Sensitive?

Answer by ChewyJan 26, 2021
The Royal Canin Gastrointestinal recipe has a lower crude protein and crude fat content than the Royal Canin Digest Sensitive recipe and less calories per can. The Royal Canin Gastrointestinal recipe also has Chicken Liver as the main protein, while Royal Canin Digest Sensitive recipe has Chicken By-Products listed as their first ingredient. Due to this recipe being prescription only, we recommend consulting with your veterinary to see if this would fit your pet's needs.

What is the main source of protein in this food?

Answer by ChewyApr 15, 2024
This recipe has pork by-products as the main source of protein followed by the chicken by-products. There is no added protein to the diet.

I bought a few cans from our vet first to see if she'd eat it, & seemed ok. Not super jazzed about it but ate. So I got a case. Of course, the second I drop the big bucks & have 24 cans she turns up her nose. My other cat will nibble it but he's got CKD & this is way to high phosphorus for him, so no one here will eat this. Wish all the RC Rx came in the 6 CT like the renal. That's such an amazing option! Thought Tiny would love this bc she's always stealing Leonard's RC renal Rx food that's same style. But nope. Tortitude strikes again.

My cat Hershey was prescribed this when he had a sensitive stomach episode. He loved it and recovered fast, so I ended - up feeding to my other cats, and they loved it too. I had to stop ordering simply because it was too expensive to feed 4 cats, with no medical need.

Questionable

Charley will eat this food most of the time, at times he will turn his nose up at it and refuse to eat it. Sometimes he'll eat it after I put some of the dry food

Charley will eat this food most of the time, at times he will turn his nose up at it and refuse to eat it. Sometimes he'll eat it after I put some of the dry food in it, but at times he just refuses to eat it. In the past I believe there has been something wrong with the food, so when this happens, I wind up having to throw it out. At times if he does eat it, he throws it up. Most times I have to throw it out, which I should not have to do because this is a very expensive prescription cat food!

Didn't Like This Either

My cat didn't care for the dry food and he didn't care for the vet diet GI thin slices in gravy. By the way, the meat is in chunck form not thin slices.
