Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can Food Help My Itchy Cat?
Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your cat's coat. Skin issues in cats can be due to food sensitivities.
About Food Sensitivities
Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a cat of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

Signs of Food Sensitivity
Sensitivities to the proteins in your cat's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

Great product
By Amazing on Dec 8, 2020
So firstly, I just want to say how amazing Chewy’s customer service is. I normally order this food through my vet, but they were on back order and I imminently needed a bag of food. I ordered the bag and called chewy- a REAL HUMAN answered the phone without me having to thumb through prompt numbers to reach customer service. I explained my cats allergy problem to her and she had my food out in the mail and on my doorstep in less than 24 hours. This food is the only food I have found that does not cause blood in the stool and ear infections for my sensitive kitty

It's a miracle
By Skimeup on Jan 10, 2021
I have two white paw Siamese cats. Both full time indoors all their lives. One is fat and glossy and beautiful. One has had problems with facial and ear sores since she was about six months old and she vomits her food several times a week. She was put on Hill's diet and improved somewhat. I had given them some tuna (on tablespoon a day!) and removed that and the situation seemed to improve. But still the facial sores and the vomiting did continue - and I moved to a place with white carpeting, which of course made the vomiting situation both more obvious and unsettling. My vet recently suggested that perhaps her facial and ear sores were due to constant scratching. It didn't seem I have two white paw Siamese cats. Both full time indoors all their lives. My vet recently suggested that perhaps her facial and ear sores were due to constant scratching. It didn't seem constant but certainly frequent and possibly the source of the sores. This is rather long but I think worthwhile. I went on Chewy's "Chat with a Vet" and asked about this. She recommended trying Royal Canin Diet since Hill's didn't seem to be doing the whole trick. I read reviews by folks who said their cats wouldn't eat it and ordered it with trepidation. After all, my cats wouldn't eat the wet Hill's diet but liked the dry. Who knows what a cat will like???? Anyhow, the food arrived while I still had some Hill's and I mixed the dry foods. The Royal Canin disappeared instantly. I haven't put any Hill's since then, though I'm keeping it for backup. It's been an 13 days now that they have been on Royal Canin and I have three observations: 1. They don't just like it, they are devouring it 2: So far, no vomits and I'd wait to write this if the other things weren't true 3: Less scratching of face and much healing of sores 4: It seems as if her coat is becoming more glossy. Not matching her brother's coat but less dull. I am writing this because I hesitated a long time before ordering this, due to the negative reviews that gave me pause (mostly saying their cats wouldn't eat it.) I have no idea what her allergy is and I'm certainly not dissing Hills. Just saying that this seems to be doing the trick for us now. … more

My Cat is saved!
By Alli on Jan 10, 2021
Poor indoor kitty was throwing up on a daily basis and had lost so much weight. The vet bill was over $500 and she recommended hundreds more dollars of testing and treatment AND this food. I said I would give the food a try before deciding on the further treatment. After the transition to this food, my kitty stopped throwing up altogether and he is back up to full weight after 6 months!

Working GREAT!
By Felgers4 on Nov 29, 2020
My vet recommended this food for my senior kitty. He is loosing weight, but all blood work is fine. He is going outside the litter box with loose stool. The vet thinks he may have cancer, but at this age (19) we are not going to test for that. He likes the taste of this food and he has not went outside the box since eating it. It seems to be making his symptoms much better!

Totally worth it
By StephF on Jan 8, 2021
The price on this is staggering and I was skeptical when the vet suggested it, but because the hydrolyzed protein fixed my kitty's GI issues and I no longer have to clean that up . . . I would gladly pay to enjoy my cats and avoid scrubbing the floor. It also made their coats softer, which was a bonus.

Expensive But Seems to Work
By SadieMom on Jan 3, 2021
My 9 year old cat had horrible skin issues and crystals in his urine, likely due to a food allergy. My vet recommended this food and it’s helped somewhat. This makes him drink A LOT of water so it’s constantly flushing out his bladder. It’s not a cure by any meals but it alleviates his symptoms and there’s not much I wouldn’t do for this cat.

Great food, budget breaker
By LuCats on Jan 2, 2021
My vet recommended this food for my cat with yeast allergies. Both my cats took to it right away. I was already purchasing expensive prescription food. I may have to find a similar food to substitute because this is literally over twice as expensive as the other prescription food. Struggling to find room for it in my budget.

Awesome and eaten
By Lori on Dec 2, 2020
One of my six cats needed to be put on a strict diet, vet recommended Hills Science product but cat refused to eat it and the wet food also. Asked for alternate brands and chose Royal Canin. I am now feeding all this product. VERY EXPENSIVE but it has solved my one cat’s horrid problem.

Life saver
By Bella on Nov 3, 2020
I got my 9 y/o cat Wilson started on this food after our vet recommended it to us because we were trying to find the issue for Wilson’s over grooming on his belly, and dwindled it down to bad stomach issues and inflammation due to diet and ever since he’s been eating this food he’s been so much better. He stopped overgrooming, he’s loving this food, he acts so much younger, and it’s just all around helped his diet. I will start adding some salmon oil for his coat soon so we’ll see how that goes! But even though it’s very expensive, I 10/10 recommend this food.

Honey loves his new food.
By MomofHoney on Nov 23, 2020
Honey is drinking water and eating his new food with great gusto. He is healthily gaining weight and he's self-regulating each day to keep his weight under control. This food has apparently made his digestive system healthy.
