About Stella and Chewy’s

In 1997, Marie Moody adopted a dog named Stella from a local animal shelter. She soon decided that Stella needed a companion and adopted a sick pup named Chewy, who joined the family and helped forge the company’s history. On the advice of a veterinarian, Marie began feeding Chewy a raw diet to help with his health issues. He quickly recovered, and both he and Stella thrived on their new food. Since this food is raw, does it carry the risk of contamination with E. coli, salmonella, etc.?

All Stella & Chewy’s products are cold-pressed, using water at pressure equal to that found at the bottom of the ocean (87,000 lbs. per square inch), where harmful bacteria cannot survive. Constant monitoring also takes place to assure that the high standards established are achieved. Every batch of product is tested by an independent lab for pathogenic bacteria including salmonella and E. coli O157:H7. Only after the results are confirmed as negative is product released for shipment.

Does a bag of food puff up to more when feeding? I used another brand of freeze dried raw food years ago, and one bag would make many servings when water was added.

When rehydrated per the instructions, the 3.5 ounce bag makes approximately 10.5 ounces, the 8 ounce bag makes approximately 24 ounces, and the 18 ounce bag makes approximately 54 ounces.

Guaranteed Analysis doesn't add up to 100%. What's the remaining? Ash and/or Carb?

The Ash content is 2.61%. Stella & Chewy's dinners for cats contain so few carbohydrate-laden ingredients, the as-fed carbohydrate levels in these products is less than 1% as-fed. This is for all flavors.

It says a 10 lb cat should eat one cup per day. How many days would an 18 oz bag last for one 10 lb cat at a cup per day?

Stella & Chewy's products are packaged by weight, not by cup count, so the average number of cups per bag can vary somewhat. However, the 3.5-ounce bag contains approximately 2 cups, the 8-ounce bag contains approximately 5 cups, and the 18-ouince bag contains approximately 11.25 cups. The average 10 pound cat would consume approximately 1 cup per day.

I have two cats, ages 8 & 9. They have been eating Stella and Chewy their whole life and this flavor for several years. Suddenly one of them quit eating it and got

I have two cats, ages 8 & 9. They have been eating Stella and Chewy their whole life and this flavor for several years. Suddenly one of them quit eating it and got pretty bad diarrhea. The other cat quit eating it a day later. I thought they might be sick, but I gave them some Orijen kibble and they chowed that. So, what is suddenly so different that two cats, that will eat ANYTHING, won’t eat this food? Chewy.com’s customer service was super nice and helpful, but didn’t have any info as to why this might have happened.

He's just tried a few of the salmon & chicken morsels and doesn't like them much. They're very fishy-smelling and I guess it's not his thing.

This was my second order - my cat loved the first bag so I ordered another bag. The first bag I received had soft and easy to break-up morsels for my senior cat. This bag the morsels are hard and extremely dry. I don't know which is typical; if it's the dry and hard pieces, I'll never order again - although not sure I want to risk it with the inconsistency between the two orders.

These are a nice addition to their main meal. I initially was searching for freeze dried foods to use as topper for my cats to make their meals more enticing. After a period of trial and error I settled on these; comes in a large bag, morsels are large and easy to crush on their food (i typically use two per plate) and my cats seem to love it a lot. They love all things salmon and tuna though. Since most of their food is fish flavored already these fit nicely with the diet. Great quality single ingredient food.

The pieces had to be cut in half after rehydration. They're too big for my cat. And she's not a little cat. She seemed to like the food.
