FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

    Great product, easy to bottle

    By mastiffmom5 on Nov 13, 2021 top1000Contributor

My girl has cushings and could not take any pills due to food allergies. The beef flavor liquid here is compound without any animal protein. Perfect for my girl. The bottle is easy to use, no leaks at all. Doesn’t have to be refrigerated. Easy to refill, not sure why others have stated they are having problems. I emailed and got all my answers before placing my order. Easy as it gets. Will continue my auto ship.

    $$$$$$$$$$$

By buddy on Nov 28, 2021

My little guy was diagnosed with Cushings over a year ago and getting meds from a compounding pharmacy has been an EXPENSIVE PAIN . CHEWEY pharmacy is GREAT . Meds come to my door, are way less expensive and now can be ordered along with his food and toys . BIG THANK YOU CHEWEY .

do not use pharmacy for specialty med

By kmcc on Oct 22, 2021

I wanted to place an order with the pharmacy. It was my first time placing an order for my dog. All I wanted to do was speak with a pharmacist about my dogs medication before I place it because he has an unusual dosage. The operator would not send me thru to the pharmacist It was obvious that she was speaking with the pharmacy and they would not let her send me thru to them!!!! Very disappointing!!!! So I would never recommend them.

    Great Product

By Buttons on Jul 22, 2021

My first time ordering for my Bichon. I hesitated due to previous comments from customers about the product leaking due to the bottle . I have had no problems with it so I assume the company has fixed the problem. Easy to use. I just measure the correct dose in a syringe and put it in a little tuna. She gobbles up the tuna very fast. Then she gets her regular meal. Thanks for making this easy.

    improved bottle

By Lolita on Jul 20, 2021

This product works well and they have since added a sealed top so the product no longer spills out during shipping. Thank goodness for Chewy and coming up with an alternative to that pricey pill!

    Terrible Bottle

By Connors on Feb 18, 2021

I love having liquid trilostane available through Chewy, as it helps considerably in finding the right dose of this tricky drug, but I sure wish they would improve the bottles. It’s necessary to shake the liquid, and the lid leaks so badly. Also a couple times when I’ve tried to open it, it was nearly impossible to open.

Medicine is good but the container is bad

By Bella on Jan 26, 2021

My dog doesn’t ‘mind’ taking this medication, so that does help. However, this container leaks REALLY bad. You need to shake it to mix together. It is leaking as you open the lid. You put the syringe in but you cannot put it upside down like other liquid medication because it LEAKS. Wasted so much of her medication, the label is faded because of this. And I do this twice a day. Hope they can change the container.
