FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

GREAT OPTION for a chewable RX item

By LWOWW on Aug 6, 2021

Great option for many people looking for compounded sizes when availability is limited in people pharmacies. I called all over and could not find the size we needed available, thus we opted to have it compounded and Chewy.com promised quickest shipping and most bang for our buck. The chew itself is a bit tough for my senior so I cut it up into 4 pieces, it could be softer but then again this is a medicine and not a treat so I am not even sure if a softer recipe is possible or if it would compromise the integrity of the RX. The foil blister packaging is tricky to break off because each chew is in a individual square that is perforated to be broken off but sometimes you end up breaking off the Great option for many people looking for compounded sizes when availability is limited in people pharmacies. The foil blister packaging is tricky to break off because each chew is in a individual square that is perforated to be broken off but sometimes you end up breaking off the squares next to it and accidentally punchuring the foil on more than one chew. All user error aside, great option for compounding. Would be great if possibiltiy of softer chew comes to fruition, could improve packaging but the main thing is that the drug is accurate and available. No complaints. … more
