Anyone using this as an overwinter insulation over substrate for tortoises and box turtles?

Answer by ChewyNov 09, 2019
This orchard grass hay would be suitable to be used for tortoises and box turtles during the winter. It's recommended not to keep hay underneath direct light as it can overheat.

Our guinea pig loves these

These take her a while to munch down, so that is good. She runs right for them every time

Arrived damaged

I didn’t cut into the box to open it, yet there was a slice on the orchard grass package.

the hay is hard to separate into small amounts/pieces. I used an old bag of bedding to give me room to separate the hay. I have to use an empty bag of bedding to be able to separate the hay into small amounts. I have to use scissors to chop up the hay. The other bags feel the same way. I don't think you have much control over this product. I just wanted to let you know. This is not the soft hay that I usually get.

Like chopped up 3rd cut Timothy

The hay is soft and green, like 3rd cut Timothy. It's two mini bales stuffed inside the bag. I was able to get some medium size strands (3-4 inch grass blades) out of the bag, but the rest was shorter than 1-2 inches. Because the hay is so chopped up, there does seem to be more dust. The strands are so short that they just fall out of a hay feeder, so I use a grass woven bed to serve (Peter's is the brand, I think - sold here on Chewy). The bits were too short for my guinea pigs to care for them. Well, they did enjoy lying in it because it is very soft hay!

Very dusty and fine pieces, do not recommend

This hay is too small and fine for my guinea pigs. It is very dusty and has caused them to sneeze a lot. I will only get Oxbow hay for now due to the port quality
