Adequan is recommended for the treatment of noninfectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness of the carpal joint in dogs.
Side effects are rare possible. The most common problems associated with Adequan are pain/swelling at the injection site or blood clotting problems. Decreased blood clotting can cause nose bleeds or gastrointestinal bleeding which can cause bloody stool or vomiting. Some dogs are allergic to Adequan but this is not common. Contact your veterinarian right away if your pet is acting unusual after an injection is given.
Advise your vet of all medications and supplements your pet is taking. Drugs that can affect blood clotting (ex. heparin, warfarin) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may interact. Other drug interactions are possible.
Pets with bleeding disorders, kidney disease, and liver disease may have a higher risk of side effects. Breeding, lactating, and pregnant dogs should not be given Adequan.

Administer twice weekly for up to 4 weeks (maximum of 8 injections).

What is Adequan Canine?
Adequan Canine is the only FDA-approved injectable disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD) for dogs. It is recommended for the control of signs associated with non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic arthritis of canine synovial joints.
No age or breed restrictions; use in pregnant, breeding or lactating animals has not been evaluated.
It reaches the joint within 2 hours. It may take a few days before a clinical difference is seen. Consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.
There are many supplements and over-the-counter products making similar claims to Adequan Canine. However, these products are only supported by statements and do not have the product testing and trials Adequan Canine completed to obtain FDA-approval.
Consult your veterinarian on whether Adequan Canine may be appropriate for your dog’s arthritis. Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Consult your veterinarian on treatment protocol and whether Adequan Canine may be an appropriate treatment for your dog.
While certain breeds are predisposed, canine arthritis is common in all kinds of dogs, affecting younger dogs as well as older ones.
My 10 year old Brussels Griffon had already been diagnosed with luxating patella since she was a young dog, but when she turned 8, we started noticing a marked decline in her activity. Turns out she also had hip dysplasia. NSAIDS had put her in the hospital with bleeding stomach for a week previously, so the vet recommended Adequan injections, and it has breathed new life into her! She's totally willing to go on walks outside again and is starting to have fun rolling in the grass with my other dog! It also helps to combine with a good canine physical therapy and conditioning program if one is available near you. I'm so happy to have my girl back again!
We have two dogs on Adequan which we inject subcutaneously. Our Rottweiler had an acl injury when he was 4 and has been on this monthly since then. He is now 9. My other dog is also 9 and recently started this and has been much more comfortable. It’s pricey at first but it’s worth it for the comfort it brings dogs.
My very first Rx order from chewy for my dogs joint pain and the medication was exposed to intense heat during shipping! Still waiting on a replacement and shipping notification! I hope this batch is packaged properly for heat resistant environments!
I was starting to look for new additions to my dogs arsenal to help keep his mobility and comfort levels up as he ages. He is a retired agility dog and I want only the best for him!!! I was hopeful, but skeptical to how well this might work for him, but let me tell you his energy level was a huge improvement!!! He is playing with his younger brothers and back to his “jazzy” self! Don’t hesitate on using this product! You won’t be sorry!!!!
So, this medicine isn’t cheap. But chewy makes it much more accessible than the vets office. Our dog uses this as well as our senior tripod cat. Neither of them mind the injections and I do believe it works.
We have a tripod dog (she was born with the front leg missing) who went into rehab at a young age. She does really well but at age of two had some osteoarthritis forming so the rehab. veterinarian at West Vet in Garden City ID) ordered the Adequan. It is given SubQ. We have just about completed the initial loading dose routine and once that is over she will get the injection once per month with a repeat of loading dose routine every 12 to 18 months. Our goal with rehab & ongoing exercise program has been to make Kylo's quality of life to be as normal, active & enjoyable as possible. In addition to the Adequan, she get's omega-3 supplement & Dasuquin Advanced joint health supplement. The hardest part is keeping her weight in control. Because she is a tripod, the rehab. vet. would like her to be "slightly" under-wt. She is currently 4# over-weight & on a diet. Kylo has always been obsessed with food & can find all kinds of ways to steal food. The other dogs, chickens & cats can vouch for that. She is a golden doodle. Her wt is 64#s.
This product has greatly relieved the pain my 12 year old lab experienced! While I can't say she's like a puppy again, she is certainly enjoying her walks. And it is quick and easy ordering from Chewy....the order came promptly!
My dog has been on Adequan injections twice weekly for just under a month for declining hips. Even in such a short time, I am seeing increased mobility and it seems like much less pain on movement. The less great is that he is suddenly having trouble with diarrhea. We are not sure if it is related, but as of now, the good it is doing seems worth it.
My vet suggested Adaquan for our 6 year old English Mastiff, Tinkerbelle. Tinker's joints were getting stiff, we'd notice it when she was getting up, she does have hip dysplasia so we weren't sure how Adaquan would work with her symptoms. We used 3 mil once a week for a month then we will start doing it once a month. So far we have noticed an improvement, Tinker seems to be acting more like a puppy, she's up and ready to go. I'm giving her the shots at home, I was a little nervous about doing it but it's actually pretty easy. The cost is a little high but it's worth it if she feels better.
Our sweet, twelve year old golden doodle was suffering from arthritic pain, limiting her desire and ability to get up and walk. Now, while still weak from two years of reduced activity, she doesn't seem to hesitate to get up and join her family. She plays as though she were a puppy now, which greatly warms our hearts! We may discontinue Carprofen, if the Vet agrees.
