Adequan is recommended for the treatment of noninfectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness of the carpal joint in dogs.
Side effects are rare possible. The most common problems associated with Adequan are pain/swelling at the injection site or blood clotting problems. Decreased blood clotting can cause nose bleeds or gastrointestinal bleeding which can cause bloody stool or vomiting. Some dogs are allergic to Adequan but this is not common. Contact your veterinarian right away if your pet is acting unusual after an injection is given.
Advise your vet of all medications and supplements your pet is taking. Drugs that can affect blood clotting (ex. heparin, warfarin) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may interact. Other drug interactions are possible.
Pets with bleeding disorders, kidney disease, and liver disease may have a higher risk of side effects. Breeding, lactating, and pregnant dogs should not be given Adequan.
Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan.
Administer twice weekly for up to 4 weeks (maximum of 8 injections).
Store at 68° - 77°F. Excursions permitted to 59° - 86°F.
What is Adequan Canine?
Adequan Canine is the only FDA-approved injectable disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD) for dogs. It is recommended for the control of signs associated with non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic arthritis of canine synovial joints.
No age or breed restrictions; use in pregnant, breeding or lactating animals has not been evaluated.
It reaches the joint within 2 hours. It may take a few days before a clinical difference is seen. Consult your veterinarian if you have any questions.
There are many supplements and over-the-counter products making similar claims to Adequan Canine. However, these products are only supported by statements and do not have the product testing and trials Adequan Canine completed to obtain FDA-approval.
Consult your veterinarian on whether Adequan Canine may be appropriate for your dog’s arthritis. Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
Consult your veterinarian on treatment protocol and whether Adequan Canine may be an appropriate treatment for your dog.
While certain breeds are predisposed, canine arthritis is common in all kinds of dogs, affecting younger dogs as well as older ones.
Our cattle dog has moderate elbow dysplasia. She was diagnosed when she was only eight months old. Our vet prescribed Adequan for her and it made a huge difference. She no longer limps and is able to go on walks and hikes and play a little frisbee. When we changed vets because we moved, our vet had her go off the Adequan to see if it was effective. Apparently it’s way more effective on horses than dogs and she wanted to make sure we weren’t wasting our money. Within a week and a half of her last injection our dog began to limp and had difficulty standing up. We gave her an injection and the limp went away within hours. For our dog it has been a game changer. FYI she is on a once a week injection.
This has helped my dog SO much! Aging 12.5 year old lab. Plus had torn both knee ligaments at different times throughout the years. Would get bouts of limping. Now, can go on walks, up the stairs and no limping. Hind foot drags a little. They gave us the pills first and they did nothing. Just skip them. These have never helped any dog of mine. Nor the chewable 'good for joints' stuff. One shot a month and good to go. After trying all this other stuff, I was so relieved to see him walk normal Plus the Chewy autoship deal is the best deal I can find.
We had to put our 3 year old golden retriever on Adequan after finding out he has degenerative joint disease. This medication is already pricey, so I was glad to see Chewy offered it for a lower price than my vet does. I'm not sure if Chewy ships via temperature-controlled trucks, but I live in southern Ohio, so I need to make sure to order it when the outside temperature is between 60-85F as the product storage info on the Adequan package is 68-77 F with allowable excursion temps of 59-86F.
My poor baby was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at the age of 5 months. She is 2 now and have seen some deterioration in her mobility, so we thought we would buy her (and us) some time before hip replacement (which we need to save up for... $12K!!!) and try Adequan. What a difference it has made at only the 5th shot in the started phase!!! She is already showing so much improvement!!! =D
So far this medication seems to be helping my dog. She has a torn acl and is scheduled for surgery in December. I’m the meantime this is a medication I will continue to keep her on to help with degenerative arthritis. She is 8 year German shepherd
My boy, Bear, just turned 15. He had slowed down a lot and actually wasn’t all that active. Adequan was recommended by his rehab vet. It has truly made a difference. He is more active and has much more pep in his step. It has really helped him.
Time frames for shipping and notification to change auto-ship have really shrunk. I received a couple shipments I didn’t need so soon because time to respond before shipment and actual shipment are much sooner.
My 10 year old Brussels Griffon had already been diagnosed with luxating patella since she was a young dog, but when she turned 8, we started noticing a marked decline in her activity. Turns out she also had hip dysplasia. NSAIDS had put her in the hospital with bleeding stomach for a week previously, so the vet recommended Adequan injections, and it has breathed new life into her! She's totally willing to go on walks outside again and is starting to have fun rolling in the grass with my other dog! It also helps to combine with a good canine physical therapy and conditioning program if one is available near you. I'm so happy to have my girl back again!
Definitely is helping our 14+ year old pug... was on the verge of being unable to walk and he's getting around much better now. Plus the price difference from the charge for Vet office to inject versus our doing the injections is significant.
We think it's great for our 10 year old border Collie's severe hip arthritis. Almost definitely. Hard to be certain. 1 ml 2x/week for maximum benefit.
