FAQ
Why is my dog itching so much?
Occasional itching is a fact of life for dogs. However, allergies, fleas, infection, mites, and other diseases may cause more frequent or constant itching, indicating a more serious condition. If your dog’s itching seems out of control, and the scratching persists, or causes skin or coat changes, make an appointment to visit your veterinarian.
Does my dog need medical treatment?
If your dog’s itching persists or you notice any of the following signs, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian to find out if the itching is caused by a medical condition:
Excessive licking, chewing, biting, or scratching
Excessive rolling, rubbing or scooting
Hair loss
Foot chewing
Recurrent ear problems
Changes in the skin, such as sores or darkened color
Redness of the skin
Body odor
Head shaking
What is Apoquel (Oclacitinib Tablet) used for?
Apoquel is an allergy medicine for dogs, prescribed by veterinarians for dogs older than 1 year of age to help lessen itch and inflammation due to allergic dermatitis.
Is Apoquel a steroid?
Apoquel is not a steroid, antihistamine, or cyclosporine (a type of drug that reduces immune system activity). Apoquel is in a different category of medications, which blocks allergic itch at the source.
Can I use Apoquel for a short time to treat a flare-up?
Yes, you can use Apoquel for short periods. Apoquel begins relieving the itch within 4 hours and controls it within 24 hours.
How long can my dog use Apoquel?

Can Apoquel be given with food?

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Do not use Apoquel in dogs less than 12 months of age or those with serious infections. Consider the risks and benefits of treatment in dogs with a history of recurrence of these conditions. New neoplastic conditions (benign and malignant) were observed in clinical studies and post-approval. Apoquel has not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporines. Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. Apoquel has been used safely with many common medications including parasiticides, antibiotics and vaccines. See full Prescribing Information.

Miracle Pills!
We have an English bulldog that suffers from severe environmental/food allergies along with being susceptible to UTIs and bladder stones. She has been on Rx food years. We were still having trouble with allergic reactions to environmental factors. Our vet recommended Apoquel (along with other medications intially) and they cleared her up almost immediately!
If we miss a few days of these, it is VERY noticeable. We will never be without them again. She feels so good now and acts like a grumpy puppy again!
We have tried many other vet allergy medications and over the counter medications. None of them come even close to Apoquel.

Does the Trick
My dog has allergies, the vet believes it’s food and environmental. This stuff is amazing, she gets 8mg per day. It worked in a few weeks. One time we did not realize she was out, so she did not get it for 2 days and her eyes were watery, and crusty. Poor thing. Once this received in the mail a few days later we continue to give this to her daily and her eyes cleared right up.

Allergic dermatitis
My German Shepherd Dog has been itching and the vet gave him some steroids called Prednisone to temporarily ease the itching. It worked initially but my dog continued to itch and chew on his paws and sides. I read up on the dog blogs and this medicine came up. I use it in conjunction with the prescription hills science z/d. The itching is 90 percent gone and his coat looks amazing. It was heartbreaking to see such a beautiful dog with a messed up coat and see him suffer. I am going to need to double the dose but it's worth it for me to see him happy.

Miracle Cure
I spent at least a thousand dollars on my Westie. She was eating her fur and skin. We tried several steroids, diet changes, bathing with medicated shampoo and nothing worked. Finally my girl was a year old and could be placed on this medication. Miraculous results!

New ~leash~ on life!
My dog had been suffering from allergies his whole life, but vets always said the allergy medicine side effects would outweigh the benefits. But as he's gotten older and we moved, his allergies have gotten worse. We finally saw a vet that immediately wanted to put him on Apoquel. I was so relieved, but worried that it wouldn't work. But it did! He no longer constantly scratches and licks (read: tears apart) his paws. All of the bandaid fixes, guilt, and stress over the years was solved with just one half pill a day. It's not cheap, but you can't put a price on quality of life. This is the cheapest price I've found, and the auto-shipping is pretty flexible, which is great for my ADHD self. We got bloodwork done before starting to be cautious as he's older, so I'd recommend doing that.

Worked for a bit, then stopped working
We bought this because our vet recommended it for our Yorkie's allergies. The medication started working right away, but after a few weeks, we noticed she was still itching, licking her paws, and biting them. We stopped using this product and instead the vet gave her a shot and we changed her food to a hydrolyzed protein one. No allergies ever since! Happy puppy, happy parents!

Major relief
Similar to other stories, my dog is older, and when I moved, his allergies got severely worse. He would with lick and scratch, causing his skin to bleed or broken skin. I've trialed this medication for 2 weeks with a significant reduction in his condition. Prior, I tried benadryl and allergy injections with no relief for him. I don't know if this is going to be the long-term solution, but it does work. I'm also changing the prescription food again to Z/D diet. He has a sensitive stomach, too. His skin and stomach could both be an issue.

Tried everything
I've tried pretty much everything to help my dog, Belgian Malinois, get relief from allergies and itching. Apoquel is the only thing that helps. If your dog scratches frequently, at least give it a try. Your dog will appreciate it.
