Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow a 7 to 14-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. For a 14-day transition plan, start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Days 1-4. On Days 5-8, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Days 9-11, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Days 12-14, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

The only kidney food my cat will eat!

By Robb on Nov 17, 2021

My cat is 18 and was diagnosed with kidney disease. She has gone through many different brands, all of which she wouldn't eat for more than a week. I'm glad I found blue buffalo kidney food because it saved her life. She was getting weaker by the day and was refusing to eat her food. Now she eats a can a day and is actually gaining some weight back. I'm very thankful and so is Mya.

    Try THIS!!

    By dani143e on Oct 4, 2021

My cat is 17 years old with kidney failure. I have tried pretty much every food that the other brands offered and she would eat for a day or two and then refuse to eat after that. I was hesitant to try this since it's not one of the major brands my vet recommended but I was desperate to find something that my cat would eat and want to continue to eat so I figured I had nothing to lose. From the moment I opened a can my cat has been eating non stop. She actually likes this and is actually eating good portions of it. I am hoping that she will continue eating it so she doesn't go hungry anymore. The food I got was not dry at all. Fingers crossed that this will be the last food I will ever need to My cat is 17 years old with kidney failure. Picky eaters

By Kittymom on Aug 29, 2021

I had received samples from Blue. My cats (3) all in various stages of kidney disease needed a diet change per their vet. I tried the other prescription foods suggested without success. They seemed to enjoy this food when I did the gradual food introduction with their old food but once it was more of this food and less of their old food they stopped eating it. I will be donating this to my humane society. I should mention they have been eating Blue Freedom canned food for years so I thought they would like this. They do however like the dry version which is always available to them.

    Surprise!!

By Smoke on Aug 15, 2021

Smoke and his two sisters are all on a Kidney Diet. To find something they will all eat has been next to impossible. Thankfully Blue Buffalo has a taste and consistency unlike some of the other pate type foods, so everyone eats it. Variety is the spice of life, but when they get this treat the bowls come back empty. I also like that it has Mobility Support too. As all three are seniors, any help they can get to keep them moving comfortably is a bonus.

    My cats LOVE this!!!

By Toodledoo on Jul 30, 2021

I was hesitant to buy this after reading the negative reviews about it being dry and hard and that you need to add water. I didn't find that to be the case at all. The texture is quite moist and similar to other wet cat food my cats have tried. But best of all, both my cats LOVE this food! One cat ate almost 1/2 a can the first time he tried it. He has kidney disease and was tolerating the Hills Science Diet kidney food but now he can really enjoy his food. And I will know that he's getting the best nutrition from Blue Buffalo, the best cat food out there in my opinion. Don't hesitate buying this. It's not dry or hard but quite moist and delicious...at least that's what my cats tell me I was hesitant to buy this after reading the negative reviews about it being dry and hard and that you need to add water. May need to add water

By Matty on Jul 19, 2021

This is a very concentrated paté - I mix in a bit of water to get it to more of a paté-like consistency. I sometimes add some "junk" paté (like Friskies) to liven things up a bit as our old cats can get a bit picky, but they do seem to like this. We tried this after Hill's stopped making their K/M canned food, and so far so good. An unexpected bonus of the Blue Buffalo brand is that is doesn't have that wet-food stink! We'll see in the long run, but a month in and so far things are good.

renal wet food that doesn't stink!!!!

By barbara on Jul 26, 2021

the 3 sample cans from BB went over well so i ordered my first case. oddly enough, just like the k/d tuna, the food arrives in a much softer consistency than the firm samples. not sure why that keeps happening, but thankfully (unlike the tuna) my girl still likes it. phew! now i have multiple options to keep that finicky palate interested.

    Finicky kitty

By Finickycharlie on Aug 16, 2021

He was used to blue until we had to change for his kidneys and he’s not a fan of science diet. Wow was I happy to see blue making this product. Special diet is always expensive glad he’s happy with his blue because he won’t eat the other brand.

    Fussy kidney cat loved it

By JodiH on Jun 26, 2021

My 20 year old cat with kidney issues has gotten fussy about foods; She usually likes a wet food for a day or so, then loses interest. So I rotate through a lot of different varieties. We tried this one for the first time and she loved it in a way she hasn't loved anything in awhile - licking the bowl clean. After a week she's still liking it. I'm sure it won't last but am thankful for a new option in the mix that she seems interested in.
