Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

How do I order veterinary diets?
- Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.
What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?
Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

She likes it, increased appetite
By LilysCatMom on Jan 4, 2021
My little old lady really likes it. I haven't seen her clean her plate like this in years. Her appetite seems to have grown and she seems happy, though she does try to sneak bites of the other cat's regular food from time to time

Cat will not touch this food
By roxynin on Jan 9, 2021
My cat will not eat, sniff, or touch this food. Will be donating. I wish there were variety packs so I didn't have to buy 24 and spend $50 just to find out that the food is inedible.

cats love this food
By condortravels on Nov 29, 2020
Vet said the cats wouldn’t like this new prescription food flavor and it would take some convincing to get them to eat it... wrong! They now SCREAM meow at us anytime we go near their bowl for more. I’ve never seen them like food more

Purina Pro Plan Kidney Function Canned Food
By Carol on Dec 31, 2020
My cat is fussy about his food. This one was easily accepted & is a good supplement to his other foods. It is Pate style which he likes.

So convenient to have this delivered
By KathyM on Jan 4, 2021
It's so great to be able to have our cat's food delivered so quickly and to be able to get more than 6 or 7 cans at a time.

Lacey's bloodwork showed kidney decrease. So many food choices, and a sensitive stomach, veterinarian friend I asked recommended Pro Plan. I was not sure she would eat it. She ate it mixed with her usual, and continues to eat it by itself. I do add a teaspoon of Hartz Delectable for kidney and digestion and she does not spit it up. I expect her next bloodwork to show good things.

Purina Prescription Kidney Diet Food - Canned
By ALM1106 on Sep 27, 2020
I've tried other canned prescription cat food diets, and my cats just walked away. This is the only one that I have found that my cats love. It is a relief since I was worried they would not eat what they need to keep them well. I couldn't find the Purina brand dry or canned prescription food elsewhere, so I was lucky that Chewy carried it. Chewy has a large selection of food.

Good for a not-picky cat
By Angie on Sep 12, 2020
My 9 year old cat was just diagnosed with early stage kidney disease, and my vet recommended switching him to Purina's NF foods. He gets both the wet food and dry food. My cat gobbles it up, however, my cat is NOT picky and will literally eat anything. I have found that the wet food is a bit dry, so I add a tablespoon of water to each can to make it more moist and that seems to help. I'll keep feeding him this until the vet says otherwise or until he stops eating it, but that's not likely. Thanks Chewy!

Nope, Nada, No way.
By 2catmom on Aug 7, 2020
My siamese will starve herself for two days rather than eat this. I introduced it mixed with other foods and am still doing so, but she won't touch the bowl as soon as she smells it's in there. It's really a lot of work now to feed her. If I wasn't home during the covid shut down I don't know how I would manage. She will eat the NF kibble, but given that she is ON this for kidney, she can't eat only dry food. So I need to make arrangements to dispose of 23 cans and am cooking chicken for her and dicing it up. Sigh.
