Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |
Day 7 | 0% | 100% |

Demi likes the hard kibble but I still have to mix her prescription wet food with Fancy Feast turkey pate. But then she has always been a finicky eater. I would recommend this prescription food but caution than only on the advice of a \veterinarian.
I've had my three male kitties on Science Diet kidney formula for around five years. I tried a sample of this from my vet and they loved it! Try this one if your kitty would benefit from a kidney function diet.
Miss Prissila had been diagnosed with early stage kidney failure, but never got a chance to try the food I ordered. It was found out right after I ordered the food that she also had an untreatable cancerous tumor in her jaw. I had to put her down at the vets office without ever getting her to try the new food. Per Chewys instructions, I donated the food to a local shelter, and as fate with have it, it was used to help a cat at the shelter who had just been given the same kidney problem that my cat had. Chewy gave me a full refund which was unbelievable in todays world!!!!!!!
I got this for my kitty that has kidney disease. She absolutely hated it. It gave her horrible diarrhea and made her poop smell worse than ever. She ate it but I had to add baby food to it to get her to even eat a little of it. I tried giving it to my other senior cats and they won’t touch it.
My 16 yo otherwise healthy black male developed mild kidney failure and I was advised to put him on prescription kidney diet. Bought the Purim’s Pro. Unfortunately it is only sold by the case no single cans and is expensive. My cat won’t eat it. I keep trying (3 cans worth) and tried mixing all sorts of other food with it but he won’t eat it. Another brand out of stock but reluctant to invest in whole case. Vet does not provide samples like previous retired vet did
My cat has been eating Hill's Science Diet k/d for years but suddenly turned up her nose at it. My vet said they frequently change the formula and that a lot of cats don't like this one. (I just got a message from Chewy saying they changed it again as well as the packaging, so I'll try it again if necessary.) I decided to give this one a try. She definitely prefers the Pro Plan, especially the dry food. I have been topping it with a little of the SD stew, which she still likes. I hope it works as well as the SD. Her blood work has remained unchanged for 6 years now, so it was definitely working. But I had to provide something that she would eat.
Purina Pro Plan Kidney Early Care, was accepted by my cat, Bear. She eats it readily, which was a big concern. The Chewy associate was very helpful in helping me decide on this flavor of food. I will order more.
We have 2 older cats that were put on this special food and they both like it. I tried the Blue Buffalo brand first and they would not touch it. We do add a little water to it.
A necessary evil that I have to syringe feed to my cat. She won’t go near it otherwise. So expensive that I can’t switch to another brand until this is gone.
The vet said I needed to put my cat on this kidney care diet. He ate it for two days and won’t eat it now. I used to change flavors every meal and now that he gets the same food every meal I think he’s tired of it. They need to make a variety pack of kidney care food. I don’t understand why you need a prescription for this food. It’s as expensive as gold, who would buy it if they didn’t have to?! -unless the prescription is supposed to justify the price?
