About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

what is the dry matter % of phosphorous?
Answer by ChewyDec 18, 2019
This food has a phosphorus content of 0.7% on an as-fed basis, and 0.769% on a dry matter basis.

Why is the protein limited when it's not the protein that causes the problems in cats with kidney disease, it's the phosphorus and sodium content that needs to be limited?
Answer by ChewyNov 27, 2019
This food is formulated to help support kidney health by restricting key mineral levels, while controlled levels of protein help manage kidney workload.

what are the levels of carbohydrates, calcium, protein, and magnesium on a dry matter basis?
Answer by ChewyJan 09, 2020
This variety contains approximately 39% Carbohydrate content on an as-fed basis (42.8% on a dry matter basis), 0.5-0.9% Calcium content on an as-fed basis (0.54-0.98% on a dry matter basis), 26% Protein content on an as-fed basis (28.5% on a dry matter basis) and 0.12% Magnesium content on an as-fed basis (0.13% on a dry matter basis).

What is the actual protein % ? The minimum is just listed.
Answer by ChewyFeb 23, 2019
The recipes are formulated to target the minimum protein content that is provided in the Guaranteed Analysis, any deviation from this as-fed percentage would be minimal. Please speak with your veterinarian to ensure the value is low enough for your pets specific needs.

After 5 months, Test results prove it works

My 16 year old kitty, Winnie, on Azodyl for early kidney decline, had more recently started drinking more water, was tested at moderate kidney disease so needed to switch to kidney support food. I found this one and got vet office to approve it though they wanted me to use another with corn gluten as the primary ingredient. After 5 months her test number for creatinine went from 3.5 down to 2.9, borderline. She likes this food better than her Wilderness kibble, maintains her weight, etc. The vet is concerned it’s lower protein, with possible muscle wasting, but so far no weight loss at all. Higher quality protein might make the difference. Also the other prescription food was much higher calorie so eating less of it means getting less protein in the end.

She’ll eat it!! Whew.

My cat was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and given two months to live. Since switching her diet she’s doing fantastic, fours months now! Problem is the prescription diet is not at all appealing to Ivy. We tried all the brands and this Blue Buffalo is the one she’ll eat. It’s nice to have the other brands to switch it up for a day since she really doesn’t love any of them. Moving her bowl to a new place very now and then also helps. Bottom line, this is one I am reordering as she’s gone thru almost the entire bag. And doing better than ever!! Very happy. And thanks to Chewy for great customer support!!

My cat likes it!

The most important thing about this food is my 16 year old cat eats it! When my vet told me my cat needed a prescription food for her kidney function, I was afraid she wouldn't eat it, as she's very finicky about her food. But she transitioned over with no problem. And a shout out to Chewy - I had been ordering this food from a different pet food store. It was time for a repeat delivery, but they were out stock and I was not notified. Their customer service was of no help, and I had run out of food. I ordered from Chewy on a Saturday and it arrived on Tuesday. Chewy has a new repeat customer!

Very effective

This formulation has really helped our cat with her arthritis and also with her renal disease. She stopped eating other brands and so switched to Blue. She is feeling well now and is moving around freely. We use their wet cat food as well and she likes both. Once in a while if she is picky, I add a small amount of her regular dry cat food to entice her to eat and this is effective.

Yay! She ate it!

No amount of quality or "good for you" cat food does a feline any good unless they will eat it. When my vet discovered some kidney issues on our most senior feline citizen, he suggested getting a kidney diet food. I bought canned and dry -- she is choosing this dry food over everything else! (And I have been cooking for her, so my feelings are a little hurt, LOL) She looks remarkably good at age 17, and I'm happy to have found a food she enjoys and will readily eat.

I Love this Food!

My two cats, Sammie and Andrew both love this food. We previously tried Science KD and Andrew liked it. However, Sammie didn't and started to lose weight. I'm happy because not only is Blue Buffalo less expensive, but it's healthier as well.

My 14 year old cat loves it!

My cat literally LOVES this food. Whenever I open a bag he comes running and tries to eat straight from the bag. He refuses to eat any other kidney dry food. I’m happy he likes this food without grain because previously he never had grain in his normal dry food either.

Blue Buffalo grain free K+M

My elder cat has been able to tolerate his new kidney disease food very well. He has finally decided that it is a good substitute for his non medical food and seems to be thriving. The litter pan is greatly improved.

Vet recommended Hills, but I went w/Blue Buffalo

My senior cat (18 yrs) had blood work done and elevated kidney levels was determined. The young vet recommended Hill's Rx. But I refuse to feed my cat and dog food with corn, wheat, soy, gluten, or by-products, as I have been well-educated by a holistic vet who specializes in nutrition and has been practicing over 30 years. Hill's products contain one or more of those no-no ingredients. I am a fan of Blue Buffalo to begin with and was DELIGHTED to discover they offered dry and canned Rx diet for kidney support - with NO corn, wheat, soy, gluten, or by-products. I bought both the dry & canned from Chewy, and Spot LOVES both. Matter-of-fact, he is right now playing with a toy like he's a kitten. I highly recommend this product. Spot and I are very happy with Blue Buffalo K-M!

Quality Food

My kitties have eaten Blue Buffalo for 13 years. When one of our kitties developed kidney disease I checked to see if Blue Buffalo had a Veterinarian prescription diet food for kidney disease. Blue Buffalo Natural K+M. This is a fantastic quality food and our kitty loves it. Also, this food smells similar to the Blue Wilderness we have been using, not like some of the other special diet foods that stink horribly.
