Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow a 7 to 14-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. For a 14-day transition plan, start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Days 1-4. On Days 5-8, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Days 9-11, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Days 12-14, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

About BLUE Buffalo
Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

Purrrfect Blue Buffalo kibble
By Jane28 on Dec 4, 2020
This is "Sammie Sosa" and I just wanted to let you know that my human finally got smart and ordered me a yummy food that I not only love but it makes my tummy feel really good and it is good for my kidneys and joints now that I am a "Senior Top Kat". I would recommend this food to any elderly fussy kitty out there who needs extra help with their kidneys and their old joints. And even my Vet agrees because it can only be purchased with an approved prescription. I require only the best in EVERYTHING, that is why my Human deals only with Chewy.com. I think they are Purrr-fect Pet People. So, I encourage everyone to deal with Chewy and in this Pandemic, ALWAYS WEAR YOUR MASK AND SOCIAL DISTANCE This is "Sammie Sosa" and I just wanted to let you know that my human finally got smart and ordered me a yummy food that I not only love but it makes my tummy feel really good and it is good for my kidneys and joints now that I am a "Senior Top Kat". Great Renal Diet
By Stacy on Dec 5, 2020
My elderly cat has kidney disease, like many cats her age. Switching to a dry renal diet food for her to graze on between kidney friendly wet food was initially difficult. We tried several different brands before I asked my veterinarian to send the prescription to Chewy so I can plus the Blue Buffalo diet. Success! It finally tempted my picky girl! Plus, the ingredients are higher quality than other brands of renal diet. So it wins due to being more palatable and healthier. The cost is hardly different than other renal food too.

SHE LOVES IT!!!
By Catdancer on Jan 1, 2021
Sabrina is an older girl and is in the first stages of kidney failure. She has tried all of the other prescription diet dry and wet foods and loathes them I gave this one a try and she loves it. I spoke with my vet about the other cats in the house loving it as well and it's a go for all!

The Best for Senior Cat
By Southengland on Dec 18, 2020
I ordered this for my underweight 20 year old cat who has mild kidney issues. He dives into it, often preferrig it over wet cat food. I know wet is better for him, but getting him to eat has become a higher priority. Its in very small pieces which I assume is better for an older cat to chew. I am super pleased with this product.

Buy this food!
By Queenie on Dec 30, 2020
My cat absolutely loves this food. We tried 2 other kidney diets prior to this one and she didn't like either one. But, she eats this without any coaxing. She also seems to have more energy and seems to be very happy overall. Give it a try.

Nailed it on the first try!
By LaRoze on Nov 5, 2020
My vet wanted me to get other brands but my cat has always eaten Blue Buffalo so I was excited to find this, and the vet said OK! I think she (the cat, not the vet) actually likes it better than the regular adult Blue Buffalo. I even have to chase the younger cat away from old girl’s bowl sometimes!

My 14 yr F1 Savannah likes
By TizaF1Savannah on Oct 22, 2020
It took her about 2 weeks to start nibbling at this food. I rationed her normal staple, "Fancy Feast" (dry kibble) slowly until she now only gets a few kibbles a day of her "treat" food. Her new main dry food is the product I am reviewing. i supplement her dry food with a couple spoonfuls of another reputable brand of wet shredded food, as another small treat. My goal is to reduce the wet and dry treat foods i give her over time. I hope to continue to have good luck with this food and my F1 girl. She now has more pep in her step and is more active as well. With a F1 Savannah, this means i have a tornado on my hands. i am her game, and she can launch from literally anywhere in my half It took her about 2 weeks to start nibbling at this food. Cat with kidney disease loves this food
By Jenny on Jan 3, 2021
My 17 year old cat who has kidney disease loves this food. She has another brand of cat food she can have but she always chooses this brand. I don’t know if it helps with her mobility or not but she loves the taste.

Very Good!
By Pinecats on Oct 30, 2020
My cat is quite picky, and I had a difficult time finding a kidney diet she would eat. I tried all the ones my vet recommended, then when I saw this, I gave it a shot. Amazingly, she really likes it. I would recommend this to anyone with kidney issues.

Renal Cat Loves it!
By Cindy on Oct 11, 2020
I have three 15 yr old cats. One of them was diagnosed with stage 2 renal disease. His appetite was poor and I had to force feed him to keep him nourished. Cats have to eat. I switched to canned food immediately, since lack of water/moisture is most likely the cause for his elevated kidney levels. There is already great improvement in his appetite. I also ordered this dry food for some crunchy treats for him. He loves this food!! Tried the vet recommended prescription diets, it was a no go for my cat. The bites on Blue are real small which is what my cat likes. In fact, my other two older cat love it too. Only down fall is I wished this came in a smaller package.
