Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow a 7 to 14-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. For a 14-day transition plan, start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Days 1-4. On Days 5-8, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Days 9-11, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Days 12-14, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    Life saver

    By on

First and foremost, my girl is the most finicky cat on the planet. She has hated almost all kidney foods on the market. The texture of the K+M is weird, I will say that.. but it’s the first kidney food that she will eat without me having to add fancy feast. I do add a little bit of water to smooth the texture out, pop it in the microwave for a few seconds and she goes to town!

Better than what the vet sells

    By on

I’m so happy I found this food for my cat! Sadly, she was recently diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. The vet recommended changing her diet to low protein and low phosphorus foods. I bought wet and dry food from my vet (Hills) but the ingredients were pretty gross (corn, pork liver, pork fat.) After doing a bit of research online I came across this. Not only are the ingredients so much more healthy but the protein and phosphorus levels are lower! We just got it in the mail today and the consistency is kinda weird, but my cat gobbled it up! Hope she continues to like it!

    High Hopes were dashed

    By on

My one cat who was just diagnosed with early stage kidney disease has always loved Blue Buffalo can and dry foods. Unfortunately, when given this food she said "I'll pass!". She eats the K+M dry with some Forti-Flora on it but the canned is no-go. Way too thick and requires 4-5 tablespoons of water to get a consistency to eat but that, apparently, removes any flavor it might have. Had to switch her to Hill's K/D can

    Not palatable

    By on

I’ve been feeding her the KM dry and she loves it. I figured the wet would be a nice treat and a way to get a bit more water in her. Unfortunately she takes a couple little bites and let’s it crust over as she goes back to the dry bowl. As a loyal Blue Buffalo customer you have Failed with a capital “ F “!!! Try again !!!

    Unfortunately...

    By on

My cats wouldn't even touch the stuff. And they're not picky at all about food. It looked kind of like canned bologna if there were such a thing, except it was smoother. It's a good brand, so I'm kinda surprised that they wouldn't eat it.

My ginger love doesn't like this pate.

    By on

My ginger love needs renal prescription food but he also likes variety. I tried this hoping he would add it to his favorite list. It is very dry, no gravy so I tried adding a little water. He will not eat it nor will the local foster group's kidney failure cats.

    Better ingredients

    By on

Kitty has slightly elevated kidney enzymes so the vet wanted to put him on a kidney care diet. Most of the kidney care diet food is utter garbage: by products, fillers, wheat. This is one of the 2 kidney care meals I found that is made with real ingredients. I had to slowly introduce it by mixing it with the old food. It is very rubbery and consistency and I always add water, because water is essential for kidney health. I also add probiotics to help support over all gut health and reduce inflammation. Kitty now gobbles this down no problem at all. In fact his sibling wants it too!!

If only our cat would eat it!

    By on

Our vet recommended this food. It is meant only for supplemental feeding, but has a very low amount of protein, so would be a good choice for a cat with kidney failure, like ours. However, the texture is gelatinous, so our cat rejected it out of hand just as she has other therapeutic foods with that texture.

    Met Cat’s Tast Test Approval

    By on

My very picky kitty is a very particular cat. She is an older girl who is in early stages of kidney failure. She does not like fish. I know and trust the Blue Buffalo brand and, when searching what was available as a prescription diet, I chose the chicken variety Blue Buffalo and she LOVES it! I’m pleased because comparing ingredients, Blue Buffalo K+M is much more palatable and supportive for kidneys.

    Her fav KD Food

    By on

My cat liked this food best out of all the other KD foods we tried. It is very firm though, so I have to cut it into very small pieces so it's easy to eat.
