FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

    Good solution for Chicken Allergies

By AustinMom on Nov 16, 2021

We were using Royal Canin HP but switched to this food because my very active, chicken-allergic Border Collie needed more fat in his diet. Vet determined he was basically starving on the HP - losing weight and his fur was falling out. He loves this food - it does have a strong fishy smell (thanks to the salmon) but he’s eating it (a lot more than the HP) and is doing much better - his fur is back, his weight is picking up. Yay!

    Helps our German Shepherd

By JWron on Nov 21, 2021

This formula is great and is helping our Tyson overcome digestive issues. No more runny stool. I wished there were more choices for dogs that are allergic to poultry. This is the only one with no chicken in it. It has a strong smell of fish though.

My dog had this after he was diagnosed and with Pancreatitus.

By AmyS on Nov 23, 2021

Now my dog won't eat it. Have a 12 can case, with one can gone and I'm going to donate it to my vet and reorder the Blue Buffalo senior canned dog food I ordered. He does however love the HF dry.

    Finally, NO Chicken Wet Food

By DogMom on Aug 21, 2021

My dog is very allergic to Chicken as part of her protein allergy. She is on a Hydrolyzed Soy Protein diet however she has a dental procedure scheduled and needs to be on a soft food. Up until recently I had been trying to figure out what to give her as most hydrolyzed wet foods used chicken. I came across this product and ran it by our vet who gave the green light to try it. I AM SO GLAD WE DID. Not only is she able to tolerate it so I can have something safe to give her after her procedure but SHE LOVES IT. Side Note: We have a cat and every time I open a can to give to my dog I turn around because the cat thinks it's for her :) lol.

    issues with grain free?

By datl on Jul 24, 2021

I decided to try this with my dog who has IBD and has been on Hill's zd for a few years now. I liked the ingredients better with Blue and was happy to see it available. My dog seems to like it fine, and he seems to be doing well on it, tho I'm only at about 50/50 transition, but now I am reading about the concerns that this brand is one of the brands named with issues of heart problems and grain free diets in general. I'm researching it and consulting with my vet, but don't know if I will continue with it at this point.

I do not recommend this. Our dog hated it and now we have expensive leftover cans we can't use. The smell is unbearable

    This is a game changer!!

By Arrowmatherapy on Mar 15, 2021

With every other prescription food on the market having horrible ingredients I was not willing to use , thank goodness I stumbled upon this one. My little French bulldog has been sick for four months and it became a fight for your life sickness that resulted in complete food intolerance. She was skin and bones couldn’t hold anything down and her body didn’t want to absorb any nutrition and needed this hydrolyzed protein. It became the game changer that turned the corner for her in a positive manner. She loves the taste of both the kibble and the canned and I am so appreciative that blue buffalo makes this blend!!

    Good Product

By Monica on Apr 3, 2021

This food works well for my Westie dog who, at 14, developed skin issues for the first time in her life. I recently began using this food -- hydrolyzed protein -- to help determine whether or not she had a protein allergy. It turns out that she is allergic to chicken! There is a strong fishy smell, because, after all it is fish!
