Does it deter deers also?
Answer by ChewyJan 28, 2021
The crushed chili peppers don’t affect birds like they do mammals so this should deter any mammal trying to eat this food.

Will the peppers harm a dog who likes to eat seeds on the ground the birds drop?
Answer by ChewyMay 18, 2021
It is not recommended for dogs to eat this blend as it is designed for birds only.

is it still effective if mixed with sunflowers seeds, peanuts and meal worms?
Answer by ChewyJun 13, 2021
We do not recommend mixing this food with others, especially not when first beginning to use it. Birds don’t have the spicy sensation when eating chili peppers, but mammals do. Chili peppers are a great source of vitamins and nutrition for birds, but squirrels and other mammals that do not like the fiery hot taste soon learn to look elsewhere for food. It may take some time to work, but visible signs that it’s working will include squirrels spending less time at the feeder, rubbing their faces and mouths, and shaking their heads. We recommend an alternative feeding station for squirrels nearby to help distract them from your bird feeders.

This product really works

I started feeding birds in my yard about 2 years ago. When I first started with regular bird seed, the squirrels would come and eat it all. There would be anywhere from 4 to 8 squirrels a day. I started using this bird seed and I saw positive results the very first day. All the squirrels went away and all I see is lots of different birds. Every once in a while, a new squirrel will wander in but quickly leave when they get a hint of the hot pepper. Recently a bear came through and ate the bird seed from all the feeders in all my neighbor's yards but not mine. This bird seed really works.

Save your money!

This seed is not worth the expense! Mostly millet and very little pepper flakes. The birds don't care for it, yet the squirrels love it! I've used other hot foods that work great. This one is a major disappointment. Fool me once. Never ever again. I won’t use this brand ever again.

Was really surprised that it works......

I have been feeding different kinds of bird seed for years and the squirrels have gotten more than the birds. I have not seen the first squirrel on a large triple feeder, filled with this product. A little expensive, but I will buy again.

Good for birds here in FL

Morning doves, grackles, Blue Jays, Cardinals, brown thrashers, etc. all flock to my feeders. squirrels however remain enchanted with the bird seed and find ways to eat around the red flakes. Still it works as a deterrent as they do not eat as much as they have been.

No more Squirrels bird food!

It really works. Squirrels hate it, birds love it. The food last much longer now that the squirrels aren't eating all of it. I am very happy with this food and the birds seem to love it too. Delivery time was quick.

No squirrels... but no birds either

Unfortunately I have seen no activity at my bird feeder since using this food - by squirrels or birds. Previously, using another brand of no-squirrel food, birds were all over the feeder. Not sure what dissuades birds from this one, but I wouldn't purchase it again.

Squirrels loved it.....

Squirrels were not deterred one bit. They ate all the seed and left the pepper. Smaller birds tossed the millet out and picked through the rest. Mourning Doves gouged themselves on all of it. Lot of waste for me. I wouldn't recommend it. You could buy regular bird seed and dump in your own hot pepper flakes.

Birds do love.Squirrels nope..

This is true.We have seen a variety of birds, including a Painted Bunting twice.A most beautiful bird.Squirrels,ha so funny. Some try then whamo, jump away quick.Have seen them rub their mouth on tree and paws.End up saving money since your feeding just birds.Oh,and raccoons don't like it.We had one that was raiding the feeder every night. They apparently don't like spicy things.A win win. Thank you Brown's!

Squirrels in our backyard hate it

I don't know about the other reviewers' squirrels, but our squirrels here in Ohio want nothing to do with this stuff. Every once in awhile one will hop up, take a sniff, and hop right back down. Meanwhile cardinals, finches, sparrows, nuthatches all help themselves. Have been using for 1+ year now.

For the birds

We had tried another brand of "squirrel-proof" bird seed which the birds really seemed to enjoy, with lots of sunflower seeds. This mix seems to have more small seeds and few sunflower seeds, but once the birds got used to it they seem to be enjoying it. We have more small birds coming to the feeder than before.
