Feeding Instructions

Great for tube feeders on decks and patios. Hopper feeders and tube feeders (with large holes) are better for sunflower seeds.

Birds generally find their food by sight. Place your feeder in a location where it will be visible to them or in a location already frequented by birds where they can perch before, during, and after feeding. This should decrease the time it takes for the birds to start feeding in your yard. It make take time for the birds to find your new feeders, but be patient, for you will be rewarded when the birds arrive. Provide your birds with shrubs and trees as protection and shelter from adversaries and harsh weather conditions.

Provide water in a bird bath or shallow container (2 - 3 inches deep) nearby.

FAQ

Where should I locate my feeder to attract the most birds?

Make sure that your feeder is close to natural shelter such as trees and shrubs to provide protection for your birds, but be careful not to make it too convenient for squirrels. Also, place it in a location so that you can enjoy watching the activities of your feathered friends.

Should I feed the birds year - round?

Yes, birds need food year - round, so it is best to keep bird feeders full all year or else the birds will leave. Birds have a high metabolism and need to continually eat. Birds nest from late winter through late summer and during these months there is not an abundance of natural foods, so they need additional food for breeding and raising their young. From early fall through the winter, natural food sources become harder to find so it is important to keep feeders full with bird seed during this time. You can enjoy your birds 12 months of the year.

What is the best bird food?

To attract the greatest variety of birds, feed the birds the seeds they like to eat. Oil Sunflower Seed is 1 of the best seeds to have in a wild bird food mix. It is popular with a large number of species and is easy to feed in a variety of feeder styles. Wagner's blends provide a wide selection of seed choices (including ones which contain Oil Sunflower) that will attract the largest variety of birds to the backyard feeder. Wagner's has the mixes that will attract the species you want and will fit any budget.

How can I attract specific birds and not attract others (e.g. starlings, grackles and cowbirds)?

Make sure that you have the right bird food to attract specific birds. Sunflower is a great seed that many species love. Also specialty blends, such as Wagner's Cardinal Blend or Finches Supreme, will attract these specific birds. Birdseed with less milo and corn won't attract as many cowbirds, grackles and starlings if you would rather not see these birds.

How do I stop squirrels from eating all of my birdseed?

Squirrels are a common problem at bird feeders. There are now a number of feeder styles designed to prevent squirrels from reaching the seed. For example, some use a weighted system that closes the feeder port when the weight of a squirrel is sensed. Squirrel baffles are also available to place above or below your feeder (depending on how your feeder is mounted) to prevent the squirrels from reaching your feeder. Additionally, there are 2 seeds that squirrels do not like - - safflower and nyjer seed. An optional method is to supply the squirrels with their own supply of food away from the bird feeder area. Cracked corn works nicely.

Where and how should I store my bird seed after I bring it home?

The best place to store your bird seed is elevated on a shelf in a cool, dry location in your garage, basement or storage shed. Whether you keep your bird seed in the original bag or in a storage container, you should make sure that it is closed or sealed tightly. It is also important that the storage location has good air circulation and is away from direct sunlight or heat source. You should avoid storing your bird seed on a cement floor, since moisture from the floor can be transferred to the seed. Keeping your seed dry will help it last longer.

Should I clean my feeder and how often should I do it?

Moldy or decomposing seeds are not healthy for birds to eat. You should wash and disinfect your feeder at least once a month and more frequently during wet weather. First wash the feeder in hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. To disinfect the feeder, immerse it for a couple of minutes in a solution of 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water. Rinse again completely with clean water and dry before refilling. You should thoroughly wash your hands after you have finished cleaning your feeder.

Before that, bird feeding was just a winter activity to give wild birds the energy they needed to survive the winter. They've also been the first to market black oil sunflower seed, regional blends, and deluxe and premium bird foods.

About Wagner's

Ducks like these...we live in the suburbs in West Houston

    By on

after the back 2/3's of our subdivision flooded homes...the ducks who lived on Buffalo Bayou displaced to us in the front end. then with gutting homes and reconstruction noise, more came and remained. I purchased a feed for ducks from Muddy&Inca (recommended by Chewy) and the ducks would not eat it. So I tried these great seeds and they loved them...even the baby ducks like them. Can sprinkle on ground or add them inside a small bowl with drinking water. Use a larger bowl for adult ducks. These seeds, plus Meow Mix Original they love. need a large bowl (I used a plastic oil drain pan from Dollar Tree) for water. You will get eggs, just like Easter on your lawn.

Love this product - no mess

    By on

I like the Wagner's chips as there is no clean up of black shells. It attracts a variety of birds that I like to watch during the day. The squirrels also like it as I have a hard time keeping them out of the feeder. Even though the label says hearts and chips I find it is mostly large sunflower hearts. I use to go to several stores to find sunflower hearts & chips, used gas and time. Now with Chewy home delivery it is so much easier. I enjoy the convenience. I will purchase from Chewy's again.

    The birds here love it

    By on

I hang suet feeders every winter (Michigan) and had not done seed/feed feeder for a few years. But when we had that super cold weather, I wanted to give the birds something extra. At first, I got no takers ... but after a few days, they were fighting for the 6 perching bars on the tall, square feeder. They empty it in 2 days now. I like that there is no mess, no waste. Everything hangs under a very large awning over my front porch, pretty protected from the worst weather. Also it's in front of the large picture window, so we can watch the birds all day.

    So worth it!

    By on

This stuff is terrific! The birds (and squirrels!) who eat on my back deck absolutely love it, and I am thrilled at how clean my deck stays without all the sunflower seed shells. Well worth the extra price to eliminate the mess from the black oil sunflower seeds I used to give them.

No Mess under Feeders and Birds love the taste

    By on

We have been looking for cheaper alternatives for our bird feeders, but we want quality seed, no mess and a mix that doesnt contain filler. This is all sunflower chips and the Wrens, Cardinals, House Finches, White-throated finches, Gold finches just love it. We have used it for 3 weeks now and we are very pleased.

    Convenient and less waste

    By on

The small five pound bags are easy to use with bird feeders. You can pour right from the bag into the feeder, which is hard to do with bigger bags. Also the birds waste less with hearts and chips than they do with whole seeds. Whole seeds are apparently too big for many birds and they toss a lot on the ground. They eat a higher percentage with the hearts and chips although they continue to toss some of the seeds. Spoiled birds I guess.

    But Chipless

    By on

This is a good product. Birds love it, but as some other reviews have mentioned, there do not seem to be any chips. Would be nice to find a product having a real mixture of hearts and chips or just chips so you can make your own mixture. In the meantime, I also use Lyric's Fine Tunes which has nuts and seeds specifically treated for smaller birds. Chewy also offers it.

The birdies seem to like it!

    By on

Seems like it might be a bit bland to me, but then again I'm not a bird! I was feeding multi grain bread and read that it's not very nutritious for our flying friends, especially during the cold winter months. So, I turned to Chewy, who has lots of options, as usual. Fast, reliable & the very best customer service!!

    Wagner’s seed

    By on

This is just what the birds ordered! No waste because this contains the hearts of the sunflower seeds and also chips. Good for smaller bird species.
