We have a 7 yr old rescue and and new addition rescue who was 9 wks old at testing. We always thought our oldest to be an American Bulldog / Catahoula Hound mix. Surprise, surprise, not a single cell from either of those breeds exist in him, but a whole bunch of others do....Mainly Pittie / German Shepherd. Ever seen a White German Shepherd with Merle markings and blue eyes? Would never had guessed that breed in him, but it does explain his high intelligence. Our newest addition was advertised as a shepherd mix, but I kept saying I saw so much boxer in him....he does have shepherd, but it was way down the line in breeds. Pittie / Boxer mix with a whole bunch of others also. I love the detail We have a 7 yr old rescue and and new addition rescue who was 9 wks old at testing. The company itself is fantastic also. They keep you informed of the process stages and if you need to contact them their personnel is wonderful to deal with.… more
Waste of money

Had good hope to determine the gene's of our rescue. Several people commented on her looking like a Carolina Dog. Her dad is believed to be a German Shepherd. We know she is mix. Our puppy's DNA came back as almost 30% Rottweiler. Nothing about a Shepherd. Our pup is tan and has the markings of a Carolina Dog, as well as their mannerism. I picked Embark because they list Carolina Dog as one of their breeds identified. I contacted the company via email several weeks ago and yet to get a response.

This was so disappointing!!! Don't waste your money, I literally purchased this January 4th and sent it in the same day and just today February 17th finally received the results and they are incorrect. My dog is a border collie mix for sure and border collie did not come up at all in the results and its stated she was in perfect health and no worries for illness at all which is weird to me considering almost all breeds have something to worry about. A COMPLETE waste of money and time waiting will not be going through that again.

I adopted a shelter dog and the only thing they told me is that he's a german shorthaired pointer mix, I was really excited to find out his full breed makeup but I got my Embark results back today and I'm not sure if they could be more wrong. They said he is 50% pitbull, with one full-bred pitbull parent and anyone who has seen this dog would tell you he has little to no pit in him. The rest of the breeds they listed seemed like guesses at best and GSP wasn't even listed. Know that there's a chance your results will be inaccurate, I wish I hadn't wasted the money.
Surprisingly Hilarious Results

My partner and I got this for our recently adopted rescue who is 50lbs and was listed as a "shepherd mix" by the shelter. My partner has been very excited to finally have a big dog, especially since I already had 2 5lb chihuahuas when we moved in together.
Hilariously, we got the results yesterday (much sooner than the initial late-February timeline they initially told us to expect) and found our that our new rescue is 50% chihuahua! I can't wait to tell people that our 50lb couch potato is a chihuahua mix!
Absolutely worth the money!
Helping us find long-lost relatives!

We have done Embark DNA on our two herder rescues - the breed identifications make sense (and help explain some personality quirks), and show our two dogs are cousins! (Maybe not surprising given they’re from the same town - Roswell NM). We also have made contact with other dog parents (via the “relatives” function in Embark) with related dogs that came through the same rescue. It’s fascinating seeing photos of all these relatives and seeing how different they can look as the various breeds manifest themselves. I’ll do Embark on any other mixed-breeds we adopt in the future.

I adopted a shelter dog and only knew that he was a "terrier mix". I suspected there was so much more to this mix and I really wanted to be able to understand my dog's behavioral traits; as well as find out the potential for any possible health issues. Sure enough, when I received the DNA results, I had my "ah ha" moment and it confirmed two of the mixes that I had suspected. The remaining ones were a humorous surprise. Great customer service from Embark as they lead you through every step of the process.
Fast results and a cool dog community

I was nervous purchasing this because there were so many different brands to choose from and were all quite expensive. After a lot of research I decided to try Embark. I was quite impressed with the packaging and presentation. The directions were very easy to follow and the results came back faster than the anticipated date. I was sure my rescue Hallie was a mixed breed, but the results came back 100% American Pitbull Terrier. I love that they list relatives and give you the option to message and talk to their owners. I found it to be worth the money.
Complex dna, this is the one.

I used the other one and made the mistake of sending a photo and telling them where my dog was from. A researcher on primitive dogs told me no way could my dog be what they said, there are no Canaans nor Basenjis in southern India. She told me about Embark, from Cornell with global and scientific orientation. I sent the saliva in and received the results: South Asian Village Dog. Google it. A true primitive breed due to natural selection. They also included a wealth of information about this breed.
So glad I ordered Embark Breed & Ancestry

This was a great investment for my dog. Not only did I find out he is a pure breed, but I also found out he does not have any genes for inherited diseases. Embark also connected me to his relatives, which is super. I will be using this for future dogs, even when I know she is a pure breed, just to know of any genetic issues in advance.
