I am working in tearing down a neglected freshwater aquarium, so I thought I'd try this out not only to help filter the stirred up water but help seed a smaller tank. I set it up and had it running on its own without my canister for 8 hours overnight and I'm very impressed with what it was able to accomplish! I've used a lot of Fuval products over the years so I knew this was going to be a high quality filter! This one definitely reminds me of the older version of the AquaClear hang on backs but upgraded. It is rather quiet with both the flow and the motor and so far hasn't made any grinding or priming noises like other HOB filters I've had. It doesn't take up much space and its able to fit in my thick rimless tank. It has plenty of space for media in a easy to remove basket. As for the things I don't really care for, all of the included media (intake sponge, biofoam, carbon and biomax) smell VERY strongly of chemicals, much more than other media I've had for over 30 years as a fishkeeper. While the only creatures I have in my tank are snails, I still didn't want to risk it. Just rinsing them off did not to the trick so I ended up soaking them in a bucket of aquarium water. It took almost 24 hours until I was happy about the smell, and since it's now been running about a week and I didn't have any mass die off they must be fine. I also feel like the intake tube is a bit flimsy. I do like that its super easy to adjust the water flow by just moving it left to right, but I'm not sure how long it will keep the suction with the motor with how it is designed. Overall though, so far I'm very impressed with this little filter and I'm glad to have an upgrade for my smaller tank!

Perfect for a 10 gallon

I used this filter in my 10 gallon that only houses 2 albino corydora’s and a kuhlii loach, but they seem to like it. They became more active almost instantly once

I used this filter in my 10 gallon that only houses 2 albino corydora’s and a kuhlii loach, but they seem to like it. They became more active almost instantly once I switched out the filter mechanisms. The filter itself was easy to “assemble” and the media was pretty self explanatory. The filter does work well, I just wish I could slow the flow a bit more.

Great size filter for a 10-20 gallon tank. Seems to have good water circulation in my 10 gallon, although the flow is too much for my floating plants. I wish there was a way to turn it down a bit further. I like the pre-filter enclosed, and the other filter media. I keep bio-rocks in the backs of all my HOB filters, so I was able to add some with healthy bacteria growth. I like that this filter holds more bio-media than my previous. In fact this filter holds more of all the media—larger space for mechanical, chemical and biological filtration, without having a larger “footprint” on the back.

I run it in a 10 gallon tank and it does really well keeping the algae at bay. I don’t even run it on the highest, fullest setting. Low does the job perfectly well!

Don't waste your money

I dont know why this filter has such high reviews. Its cheap plastic. There was a Crack in it where the motor housing attaches to the filter box and it leaked water
