Gatsby Classic Nylon Horse Breakaway Halter & Snap, Orange, Cob

Got this halter in Cob size for my 15 hand Appaloosa and it was too big even on the smallest settings. I had to punch more holes in the leather crown piece to get it to fit properly. Aside from that it’s a fine halter for leading between paddocks, the throat latch buckle is very convenient for putting on and taking off. However the construction is a bit flimsy, I wouldn’t use it to tie up a horse unless you’ve got the most polite horse in the world - which I do not. Overall it’s worth the $14 I spent on it.

It’s very adjustable and is sort of durable. The cheek snap is a pretty flimsy piece of metal and has edges, it’s the type of snap that I would be worried could take out an eyeball if it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This halter is half the price of the visually very similar Weaver breakaway but I ended up getting another Weaver anyway. The construction of the Gatsby is subpar and I would never leave my horse in it for longer than a few minutes because of how it rubs, but if it’s just being used to transport a horse to and from turnout I’m sure it would be fine. Doesn’t meet my needs but I work in the equine industry and my gear faces heavy use. It’s an ok halter, just would probably be better suited for light use.

The quality of this halter leaves a lot to be desired. The snap has a sharp edge with a big angle towards the horse's cheek. The crown piece is not entirely leather, making it difficult to buckle and arguably not as breakable as I would like.

Purchased this for my 16 hand QH. Horse size fit him perfectly. Last night he got hung in the fence. The halter did exactly what it should have done. It broke away at the crown with out leaving a mark on the horse! Will be purchasing again.
