Get past outer layer-
At first I would have given this a much lower rating. When we first opened it, there was some smell, but the first couple days when taking it out there really wasn't any smell and my buns didn't really take to it. I was ready to cancel my subscription. But, once we got past that 'outer layer' of hay, it became very strong (lovely smell! Not bad) and my buns jumps excitedly when she gets a fresh bunch (which is often cuz she really does enjoy this stuff lol. )
This is high quality orchard grass. Packaged very conveniently in a zip bag in a sturdy box. My guinea pigs love it.
Guinea Pigs Were Not a Fan - Dry and Rough
I accidentally ordered this hay thinking it was another well-known brand that starts with an O. It arrived dingy, rough, and dry. My guinea pigs were not fans at all. Purchased our usual go-to aforementioned brand and there is a STARK contrast. Put the normal brand in their enclosure after a month of this brand and we've got exaggerated wheeks and popcorning again. Their usual excitement at hearing the bag of hay had disappeared with this brand. It's now back.
Thought I’d try this new brand and offer some variety to my bunny’s hays. It had no fragrance and she therefore took no interest. I keep trying for the past couple weeks however she definitely doesn’t like it. It was most likely leftover last year’s hay and has therefore lost its flavor and fragrance.
Fun to try
The hay was very stiff and the strands are rather short. Not worth the price in my experience. But interesting to try and shake it up.
My 4 Piggies love it! Fragrant, green orchard hay. Comes in a mini bale that is easy to store. Would definitely purchase again!
Not a fan at all
Boys didn't care for it and neither did I. Has a musty or old smell, not fresh at all
Very good quality hay
its good hay. my guinea pig loves it. He's 7 years old and he gets lonely sometimes but he has health complications so he can't be paired and that makes him not eat as much. I had no trouble getting him to eat with this hay.
Bonita & Guapo
My bunnies love this hay! I love the way it is packaged to keep it fresh and less messy
Love this hay. Just a bit more expensive than Kaytee, but from the one package I've gotten so far, this is very consistent good quality from start to finish. It's packed nice and compact, and very easy to remove a layer to fill up the hay rack. I find Oxbow very hard to remove from the package because they pack it so tightly, but this is packed extremely tightly while being extremely easy to remove, and without making a mess. Kaytee wafer cut hay tries to do this, but is still inconsistent in quality, and a mess. The way Hall's Hay is neatly packed also allows me to fill up the hay rack better so that I am filling it less often. Other brands are inconsistent, with lots of little dusty pieces, and/or lots of straw-like pieces. This package was full of nice grassy pieces start to finish, and the consistent quality meant my rabbits ate most of it, instead of wasting half of it to find the pieces they like. I usually purchase Timothy, not Orchard Grass, so I'm not completely comparing apples to apples here, but I just ordered a bunch more Hall's Hay including some Timothy because I am so happy with the Orchard Grass I purchased.
