- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.
I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

The best food!
By TiberiusMom on Feb 6, 2021
Our pittie had struggled with skin issues, severe allergies, and had a persistent ear infection. After steroid shots, rounds of antibiotics, and months of trying supplements and conditioners our vet recommend this food. Within 2 weeks of switching our baby was shedding less, his red hot spots were gone, his ear cleared up, and his coat was absolutely gorgeous. We will never use anything else.

Allergy Dog
By AmyB on Jan 17, 2021
Vet recommended for our 6 year old Golden Retriever who has allergies to dog food that uses processed chicken in the ingredients, which is a lot them. We have been able to get her off Apoquel which is a huge step. And we are ultimately paying less to maintain our dog even though this food is pricier than others. Glad to have found this food!

Did exactly as described and my dog loves the taste!
By Taylor on Jan 1, 2021
We got this for our 3 year old Great Dane who has a very sensitive tummy. He was eating a food that later got recalled, so we needed to switch. We’ve had to try 3-4 other foods (also duck protein) that just couldn’t settle with him. We finally tried this one after a vet recommendation and it is fantastic. From day 1, this food never bothered him and he couldn’t wait to eat it. He loves the taste! The price is worth it and I definitely recommend!

Hill’s Science Diet D/D
By NonnaB on Jan 18, 2021
Our veterinary clinic no longer sells the prescription dog food that our 6 yr old Lakeland terrier eats. Chewy quickly coordinated approval from our vet and shipped the dog food within 2 days.

Good, but expensive
By JohnS on Jan 7, 2021
Our dog likes this food and she has to have it due to alergies, but it is expensive, hence the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

do not buy for skin conditions
By doglover8 on Oct 13, 2020
My vet told me to but this for my dogs skin conditions and so I did. Half the bag is gone and the skin conditions haven’t got any better. Calling to make another vet appointment today because this food dose not work for my dogs skin conditions

My sheltie no longer needs Apoquel after starting this food!
By threedogfam on Aug 13, 2020
Our vet put one of our shelties on this food, after being in the hospital with pancreatitis and acute kidney failure. Let me tell you, we tried all three flavors dry and wet. This dry, duck flavor is the only one he will eat and he loves it. We didn't try this food for his skin issues, but he has been able to stop taking his Apoquel medication! He used to get terrible hot spots that would require antibiotics, but not since starting this food! Super happy with this purchase!
