Why did you change the formula and why were you not transparent about it? My dog will not eat now and we are really struggling. We have been loyal to this food for five years and are so frustrated.

Answer by GiGiAug 15, 2025
I am sorry to hear about this . For your baby I had the same problem also . Go to an animal hospital and they have the original there. Hope this helps .

My yorkie doesn’t like this dark nasty dog food after eating it for several years . Science diet zd looks bad, you should have notified customers!! And why is ground pecan shells in it?? Not happy

I will also ask why was the formula changed to this specific prescription formula?? Since the witch my dog has had itching and now on a daily apoquel to control the itch. I’ve tried other hydrolyzed and didn’t work and have been using the hills z/d for years. Please go back to the old formula.

Same question as the previous poster about the change of formula. My dog is on a hunger strike until you bring the old one back.

My IBD dog was doing so well on this can food. Now they've changed the formula & its darker ans smells weird. It made my dog sick & she vomited and now won't eat it. Apparently many dogs have had the same reaction. I dont know why they would change something thats meant for sensitive dogs, probably something to do with decreasing their cost and increasing their profit. Please change it back.

Within the first few days of feeding my dog the new formula my dog started throwing up. I was able to go to a local vet and get a case of the old formula to mix which helped. The next two shipments were the old formula so no issues. The most recent was the new formula and I don’t have any of the old to mix so my dog is throwing up again. Hopefully I can find something else that works for her. This is awful.

My dog has suffered with stomach issues and vomiting acid. My vet put her on a hydrolyzed diet. Both kibble and wet food. I also give her a Biome subject. This strict diet seems to have relieved her symptoms. I will keep her on this diet as long as it keeps her feeling better.

Instead of “original flavor” this food is now “chicken flavor” and my dog HATES it and will not eat it. I chatted with Chewy and they are refunding my purchase for the uneaten cans. This was my first time to use Chewy customer service and I am impressed. I love Chewy. I did not think that I would like having my dog food delivered but Chewy makes it so easy.

SHAME ON HILLS SCIENCE DIET

I agree with ALL of the aforementioned complaints. Shame on Hills/Science Diet for not being transparent about the change in formula along with time and direction

I agree with ALL of the aforementioned complaints. Shame on Hills/Science Diet for not being transparent about the change in formula along with time and direction for transitioning to a different food. They of all people, should have known better. I’m not going to go on and on, I’m just going to inform readers that Purina makes an excellent substitute. It’s called Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Wet or Dry Dog Food. It comes in cans and dry kibble. My dog loves it and it was a life saver in light of what happened with Hills’ food. I wouldn’t be surprised if a class action lawsuit was filed against Hills. These numbers are staggering and I’m sure they have lost MANY customers. Give Purina’s prescription food a try, I hope it brings you and your dog some relief.

Damaged cans

This is the 2nd order I’ve placed for this item. Both shipments came with multiple severely dented cans. I assume this is happening in the handling process at Chewy

This is the 2nd order I’ve placed for this item. Both shipments came with multiple severely dented cans. I assume this is happening in the handling process at Chewy. They need to insist on better quality control in handling. This food is expensive.

My pet has barely been eating this new formula after being on z/d for years. He has also been very itchy & irritated, licking and rubbing himself against all the furniture. He’s already on Apoquel. New formula is terrible & I will no longer purchase.

Adding my disappointment in the new formula

My 17 year old girl Maggie has been on this food for a few months now. Originally she was on Royal Canin HP, but hated the taste. I tried the Hills z/d and she liked it so much better. We're on a weight gain journey and she's really started to improve, but when I opened this newest bag of food as well as the can, I could tell it was different. Nothing on the bag indicated needing to transition from the old one to this one (they still have the same barcode SKU - it SHOULD be the same product!), so I gave her her normal servings. Later that night she was pacing around the house unable to fall asleep or get comfortable. Soon after she was scratching constantly and wheezing. Whatever is in this new formula caused a very bad allergic reaction. I am SO disappointed in Hills for not disclosing the new formula. Yes, the packaging now said "chicken flavor" instead of "regular flavor," but it just looked like a new package design. It's absolutely criminal they do not disclose it is a new formula. Putting pecan shells in a food specifically designed for dogs with allergies is absurd, and clearly we're not the only ones with issues due to this new formula. I sincerely hope they see how much stress this has caused on pets and go back to the original formula. Even if they do, I'm not sure I would trust a company that changes a formula like this without any warning to their loyal customers.

Like many others, I was shocked to find out that Hills updated the recipe and didn't communicate with customers at all about the change. Now, I'm out of the previously manufactured original flavor (which my Dachshund was on for years) and my dog won't eat this new variation. My dog has stomach issues and now I have no way to transition him properly to a different recipe. I'm beyond angry. This is unacceptable, especially when it's a product that is intended for animals with stomach sensitivities. It's also unethical to charge a customer for a product they did not consent to buying. I will be contacting Chewy for a refund.
