About Hill's Prescription Diet Foods for Skin / Food Sensitivities

Improving Lives Together

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Sensitive Dogs

Dogs with skin and coat conditions or food sensitivities can benefit from Hill's Prescription Diet z/d and d/d foods. Prescription Diet d/d has limited ingredient nutrition and a single intact animal protein. The Prescription Diet z/d food features a highly hydrolyzed protein and a single carbohydrate source to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Many pet parents discover that simply eating the right food helps eliminate food-related causes of skin irritation and helps avoid reactions to food.

Clinical Nutrition

With Hill's, it's not just high-quality ingredients that count. Their focus is on the proper balance of nutrients in every recipe. So Hill's has developed foods that are designed to help pets with specific health conditions, providing the right nutrients to support their health. Formulated by Veterinarians

Hill's Prescription Diet started with a veterinarian's belief that some health issues could be managed through nutrition. The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.

Meeting the Highest Standards

Providing a food that delivers exactly what it says it does is Hill's number one priority, in fact, they perform over five million safety and quality checks every year. They've established relationships with trusted suppliers and will only accept ingredients that meet stringent standards.

The Taste Factor

You might know that Hill's Prescription Diet is good for your pet, but she's only concerned with the taste. Even though they place a heavy emphasis on nutrition, Hill's hasn't forgotten about palatability. Why did you change the formula and why were you not transparent about it? My dog will not eat now and we are really struggling. We have been loyal to this food for five years and are so frustrated.

Answer by GiGiAug 15, 2025
I am sorry to hear about this . For your baby I had the same problem also . Go to an animal hospital and they have the original there. Hope this helps .

I’m really disappointed with this change. My dog refuses to eat the “upgraded” food, and it’s been stressful trying to get him to eat at all. Consistency matters when it comes to pet food, and changing a formula without considering how dogs actually respond isn’t an improvement for us.

Did the formula change on this item? I have a can of z/d that is blue and listed as original flavor and not the one shown here with orange Hydrolyzed Chicken Flavor.

My dog weighs approx 9lbs she should be around 7lbs, how much do I feed her each meal as she gets breakfast and dinner?

Answer by AutumnwingsJan 18, 2026
The feeding amounts listed on dog food labels, regardless of brand, are the total amount for the entire day, not per meal. If you feed your dog twice a day, you simply split that daily amount in half and give half at each feeding. This article from Taste of the Wild explains portioning clearly and may be helpful. (You may need to Google "Taste of the Wild What's a conscientious pet owner to do" if the link doesn't show.) Dogs should be fed based on their ideal or healthy weight, not their current weight. Many pets become overweight for several reasons, and overfeeding is one of the most common. According to Hill’s Science Diet feeding chart: A 5 lb dog should receive about 5/8 of a can per day A 10 lb dog should receive 1 can per day Since your dog’s ideal weight is around 7 lbs, a good starting point would be no more than 3/4 of a can per day. Split into two meals, that comes out to roughly 2/3 cup (about 5 oz) of wet food per meal.

Concerning food

Our last auto-ship case of the Hill’s Prescription Diet arrived at a time of personal upheaval due to an unexpected health crisis. With help from friends and family, we were able to have our fur babies taken care of. We are alarmed to discover the canned food in this case appears to be old. The food appeared to have a dark grayish tint. The wet food up until this case has always been light brown, moist and consistent from can to can and case to case. These cans have black residue on the bottom, the texture is harder, it doesn’t have the usual fresh smell, and there is some liquid in the cans that has not been there in previous cases. Our ability to take care of our fur babies is back to normal and we are able to take care of them on our own. We have seen ourselves how the food has looked from one can to the next when it is freshly open. We are very concerned. What seems like exceptionally old food may be a change in Chewy’s ability to manage their internal warehousing/delivery process. It gives us pause as to whether we can trust Chewy as our provider of this medically necessary food, which both of our pups get, but one does in particular for a serious condition. We are evaluating options to ensure we only receive such important food as it was intended by Hill’s. As much as we have enjoyed Chewy’s service up until now, this is much too important an issue to not address immediately.

I adopted an elderly dachshund. He has some pretty sever skin issues. I did not know the hydrolyzed protein he was on was for that. After sitting with my vet and her reviewing his records she recommended we put him on hydrolyzed food. He would not eat the dry food he came with but he eats this pretty consistently! More than I thought he would and it is doing him well. Will be trying the other dog on this and see if it helps.

That the picture was different than what I ordered.

Unhappy that hills changed the ingredients without letting consumers know. Therefore Chewy didn't let consumers know of the change. This is not ok. Pet's can't tell

Unhappy that hills changed the ingredients without letting consumers know. Therefore Chewy didn't let consumers know of the change. This is not ok. Pet's can't tell you how it tastes or how they feel. I've been using z/d for many many years and do not want the change. My furbabies are my everything and I used the original kind for a reason. If I wanted changed ingredients, I would've ordered something else or a different brand all together. Now I have to start all over and find something else that works. This is NOT what I ordered.

I noticed the label looks different. The food looks different and my dog noticed immediately but ate it and was happy. I got the original flavor wet and this one is darker grainier it is a chicken flavor and it has pre and probiotics. I was worried that any change even a drop of water could affect my little girl’s stool but no changes at all. She is thriving and I am a happy dog mom.

They changed their formula in April to include “ActivBiome + Digestion” and now has a logo next to the Digestive Care label. This is a NEW formulation that my vet did not know about and made both of my dogs sick and I spent over $400 on a vet visit to test for pancreatitis. Thankfully it was inflammation, but this is an awful time to have been given this new shipment. We had to go to pet stores around our area to find the old food, since this new one is making our dogs vomit and have diarrhea.

Anny isn’t fond of the new food. Not sure if it’s the taste or color but she doesn’t want it. I am tired of spending money on food that she will only eat 1/3 of the time. She only eats it then because she is so hungry. Luckily, I can supplement with apples as treats and her ZD kibble that she tolerates. I’m sad about your changes.

My dog liked this after sampling. I bought another round and WHAM....the color was dark and gross looking. Then I thought maybe it FROZE during shipping? My dog wouldn't eat it. Well, they replaced it and it was only a bit lighter. Dog still turns away like she knows their is something nasty about it. DID THEY CHEAP OUT THE PRODUCT SOMEHOW? Pet owners have the right to know if HILLS pulled a product change! Switching back to Royal Canin

The 5.5 ounce cans are great as I use the pate to supplement the kibble.

My Labradoodle has digestive issues and is now on the Hills Hydrolyzed Z/d hydrolyzed chicken formula wet food used to supplement the Z/d Hydrolyzed Soy formula

My Labradoodle has digestive issues and is now on the Hills Hydrolyzed Z/d hydrolyzed chicken formula wet food used to supplement the Z/d Hydrolyzed Soy formula as both are easy to digest. His digestive issues have dramatically improved in both his stomach and intestinal tract. Both are low fat which makes digestion easier. Thank you Hills Science!
