Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.
Transition Day | Current Diet | New Diet |
---|---|---|
Days 1-2 | 75% | 25% |
Days 3-4 | 50% | 50% |
Days 5-6 | 25% | 75% |

- At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
- Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Helped with allergies
By AKB126 on Jan 19, 2021
Our cat was prescribed this diet because she developed an allergy to the food she had been eating and was scratching herself causing sores. She loves this food and would binge eat it constantly if she could. Helped with the allergy, too - the itching went away!

What's up Hills??
By Lilliput on Dec 1, 2020
I have contacted Hills twice and they keep insisting that the d/d is just 'temporarily' out of stock, but come on, how long do they consider 'temporary'? Since I had to find a replacement "temporarily', I am now giving my kitty Natural Balance limited ingredients duck and green pea. It's close to the consistency of the d/d and my cat likes it, but I would definitely go back to the Hills if it is ever available. (My cat has megaesophagus, so his food needs to be mixed with water. The d/d mixes easily and remains smooth. The Natural Balance doesn't mix as well, and there are large chunks of something like bone - I have to skim the liquid off the top to feed my cat.)

Yes, yes, yes!
By Cindy on Nov 20, 2020
My cat Zeke has such a sensitive stomach and it’s SO hard to find a food that works for him. He lives this food and his poop has been normal with it! I just wish it was more consistent, I’ve had cases where it’s dryer and cases where it’s a nice normal Patti. Spoke with hills because it’s so hard to find anywhere and they explain that they’re ramping up production on because of the pandemic certain ingredients ingredients are slower coming in. I feel bad for all the for babies that can only eat this. Please, Hill’s, manufacture more quickly!!!

Works for IBD
By Sarah on Sep 14, 2020
Very appreciative for this food because it seems to help my kitty with IBD. I only feed him this wet food and he loves the taste. My constructive feedback includes: 1. Lowering the price to make it more affordable 2. To do more to prevent the cans from being delivered dented. If I’m paying so much for the food I expect to get non dented cans. However I will say that chewy does an exceptional job with refunding or sending a replacement for dented cans. 3. To have more consistency with the quality of the product. I noticed that sometimes some orders are more fresh cans and are juicy where some other orders are dry.

It’s a no go
By Newpuppyowner on Jul 20, 2020
I ordered this food on the advice of my Vet. My cat has not been eating well and my vet is suspecting IBS. She suggested I switch to this limited ingredient diet which has a protein that she hasn’t eaten before. She ate a few of the sample cans so I ordered a case from Chewy. Unfortunately, she has stopped eating this food as well. I don’t think it is a reflection on this food. It seems to be a recent pattern. I try a new food. She eats it, I order a case and then she stops eating it. I am intending to donate these and other cans to a local shelter. Unfortunately, it should keep them in food for quite a while.

Seems to be working
By xstroud on Aug 21, 2020
My cat has been having stomach issues for a couple of months now and switching to this wet food has seemed to help a bit. He didn't love it at first, but he's an extremely picky eater. He loves the kibble option.
