We use the Hill's d/d duck formula (canned). Our cat has a suspected chicken allergy, a history of urinary blockage, and ONLY eats canned food. Currently, there are only 3 options out there that are hypoallergenic/novel, urinary safe, AND canned; Hill's z/d, Hill's d/d and Blue Buffalo's hydrolyzed. We tried all 3 and the d/d is literally the ONLY food he can have that meets all his requirements without making him continuously sick - otherwise I would've probably switched by now. Some cases he does REALLY well on. Others, he is throwing up or having soft stool. I have been keeping track of the lot #s from each case he has eaten, along with his symptoms for several months now. I see a clear connection between certain Lot #s and how he responds... even down to the production line. Sometimes a case will have cans from production lines A AND B in it, and he might do great on B but not the ones from production line A, even though it has the exact same date and time stamp. I've even gone so far as to ONLY feed him the cans with the B designation until those run out. Sometimes A is the 'good' one, and sometimes B is. Sometimes both are fine, sometimes both are terrible. When I get a case with an older lot # that I've tracked before, I can reliably predict how he'll do based on the data I've kept. It's beyond coincidence at this point. I've reported this to Hill's and they've started an investigation, but I don't have much confidence it'll go anywhere. If I had to guess, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the 'bad' batches/cans. I think they just have too much of an allowed variance from one batch to another, meaning the balance of ingredients shifts enough that it causes him to flare up. Peas can cause issues in animals, so I'd guess it's too much of that in certain batches, but this is just my speculation and not proven. Again, if I could get away from it, I would but I hope this post inspires others to start tracking their food lot #s along with pet symptoms to see if there's a correlation. I am grateful that this food works for him when it does, but it would be really nice if it was consistent. Since he literally only eats this food, a case of 24 only lasts 10-12 days, so we're regularly dealing with the ups/downs that go along with switching it up all the time.

We have two kitties dealing with IBD issues. If your kitty is also struggling with tummy woes, I highly recommend looking into kitty biome probiotics, which were life-changing for our cat. We combined this with a strict diet trial on Hills DD. While ZD is another option, I preferred the ingredients in DD (ZD contains some trigger ingredients like citrus and walnut shell). Anyway, this worked for us, I hope it will help your kitty, too!

My Cat loves the food, and it's probably what she needs....and I'm happy we have found a food that doesn't have any pork products in it. That said, the number of dented cans was shocking. Even more shocking was how many were severely dented. One even dropped metal into the food when I painstakingly opened it.

Very good Hill's Rx food. Vet approved it as Bo has itchy flanks and we thought it might help cut back on his overgrooming and subsequent fur loss. Well, didn't help any "food allergies" he may have had and this food is awfully expensive, but Bo's fur has never been silkier and healthier.

We tried the d/d after discovering the Hill's z/d formula had been changed. Our cat had refused to go near the "new" orange label z/d so we tried transitioning him to the d/d. He didn't take to it at all, which may a result of it being a different texture. The z/d is a hydrolyzed pate while the d/d is more like a hamburger mixture consistency.

It must be great!

Leo really loves this canned food. He’s on this prescription diet along with the tried food of this same brand and type in hopes to help with gut and skin issues

Leo really loves this canned food. He’s on this prescription diet along with the tried food of this same brand and type in hopes to help with gut and skin issues. He gets a liquid medication in the canned food and eats it all up because he seems to like it so much. We just started the diet so it will be another 7 weeks before we hopefully see results.
