About Kurgo Gear

Kurgo believes that your dog deserves to go everywhere you go, safely and comfortably. Way back in the early 2000s, before dog travel gear was a thing, Kurgo set out to solve a problem: how to keep the family dog from jumping in the front seat of the car. After lots of brainstorming and prototypes, their Backseat Barrier was born. Twenty plus years later, they’re still finding new ways for you and your dog to go together in confidence.

If the carabiner loops around the the shoulder and waist part of the seat belt and then attaches to the harness, what is the function of the 10’’ tether on the carabiner?
Answer by AJG7 • May 01, 2022
If you find and read the Kurgo manual, the D-ring attached directly to the shoulder/waist straps (like in the photo) and then to the harness is how it's supposed to be used and what was crash tested. The short tether/handle part is for using as a short lead for training. For me, I like it b/c I can easily unclip the d-ring from the belts and have a handle so my dog doesn't just straight out of the car. Kurgo will tell you NOT to use the tether hooked to the seatbelts for safety. That's in their manual.

Is this harness good for walking/hiking/general wear while running and playing? Or is it more of a walk/car ride harness? I have a 46lb mix that is a puller!
Answer by Chewy • Jul 17, 2018
The all-steel Nesting Buckle System in this harness is based on the engineering for harnesses used by rock climbers and linesmen ensuring strength and safety. The chest pad and straps are also very comfortable, making this dog car harness great as an everyday walking harness.

My dog hates having to step into harnesses. Does she have to step into this one or is it easily slid on over her head?
Answer by Chewy • Nov 01, 2018
This is not a step-in harness. The harness clips at the top, on both sides. You can place it on top of the dog, and then feed the rest of the harness through either side of their chest.

Trying to train my dog to walk correctly. I’ve been wrapping a leash around my left hand and holding the clicker also. If he sees someone or something he begins pulling, I need something shorter to keep him at my left side. Can the seatbelt attachment be used to keep him nearby while walking?
Answer by Chewy • Jun 21, 2018
The 10 inch dog seat belt loop can also be used to keep you dog closer to you during walks.

So far, so good

Was worried about this after reading some other reviews, but it isn't that hard to use. It is an 'over the head' harness and I wasn't sure if Ruby would be ok with that. But we were able to put it on and get it adjusted. We are only using this as a car harness, I'm not sure she would be comfortable going on walks with it. Hopefully we don't need to find out it's safety rating in real life!

Most annoying design!

I have this harness and am currently on Chewy browsing for a replacement. The buckles are metal and have an extremely fussy design that always takes a minute or more to attach or detach. I don’t understand the point of this design other than to annoy pet parents. Looking for one with a normal, easy buckle design now.

Great in car and as harness

He's still adjusting to it in the car. He can still move/sit/lay down/stand but a lot less than before and he still hates it (he's a pacer) but is definitely more safe. But it's also a great harness for on walks. Sturdy and good at deterring his pulling, we've switched completely to this one from our previous 2 Hounds harness. Would recommend

Affordable, secure crash-tested harness

I recently learned about crash-tested harnesses, and decided to purchase a couple to keep my pups safe. These are reasonably priced, they fit well, and the buckles seem very secure. It's easy to securely strap my pups in the car now, which is a load off my mind.

almost perfect

Love that this harness has metal parts rather than plastic. All around very sturdy. Good looking. Not the easiest to put on a wiggly dog as the metal parts don't click together the way plastic ones will. But they much sturdier and I have no doubt they will last longer. My only complaint is that the snap which holds the rear strap in place has a tendency to unsnap causing the harness to slide around to the side. Doesn't affect it's usability. Likely due to the fact that my dog is a puller (that's why I use the front clip). The carabiner and strap for the car is easy to use, gives him enough leeway to move around a bit but gives me peace of mind. Also helps in that he can't jump out of the car as soon the door is opened. All in all a quality item just takes a bit of patience and getting used to.

Too small and too difficult to fasten

I bought this harness to ensure my girl was securely fastened in mar and in her carrier for my motorcycle. The measurements I took indicated she was an extra small, the girth was way too tight but the neck fit. the fasteners are extremely difficult to use. I am returning the product.

very disappointed

Researched this before I bought. Seems to be of good quality, BUT -fit much smaller than written. I measured exactly and the chart said fell right in the middle of medium, but that turned out way too small. and she's only 24 lbs; -harness very heavy, too heavy for a small dog; -directions for car use inadequate; -very difficult to figure out how to use in car. Might be good if one could get through these initial issues, but I couldn't. Best thing about it was Chewy's customer service!

85# GSD Fits great!

Easy to put on! Easy to remove. Large fits my 85# GSD perfectly with a tad of wiggle room. Wish I had a different color option considering she is black. Lol. Have not tried it in the car yet! Will update.

Not a good product

These may be highly rated harnesses, but both of my dogs got out of them while in my car. They did not fit right, plus the clasp was hard to manage. Would not recommend this to anyone. In fact, if I can't return them, I'm throwing them away.

This harness runs small. Measuring my dogs chest the first time I choose extra small. Did not fit so I ordered a small. After letting it out completely it would not let her head through. So, I need a medium now.
