There is nothing exactly wrong with this seed mix, but the birds in my backyard (SF Bay Area) just don't eat it from the seed tray. Perhaps if I didn't have other things for them to eat (hulled sunflower seeds, a "Bug, Nuts, and Fruit" cylinder, and suet cakes), they would eat this, but as long as they prefer the other things, offering this adds nothing.

Lyric is fast becomming my number one brand for wild bird food. This woodpecker blend is the base for a custom blend I put out in platform feeders. All of my birds enjoy it, not just the local downy and red-bellied wookpeckers. My various nuthatches, titmice, blue jays, cardnals, etc. all enjoy it as well. And yes, there is no waste when I go to re-fill the platforms. One note, I generally steer away from any blend with corn (often used as a cheap filler), but the corn in this mix is cracked (smaller pieces) and is eaten as well.

I have to stop feeding birds after winter due to our local bear over-population. Breaks my heart because I fed birds year round for many years. But I have about 10 sweet chipmunks that I’ve fed since they were babies and they come from everywhere when I call them. I discovered that if I use a no waste bird seed and hand scatter it on my patio each day, the chippies clean it all up by nightfall and I don’t get bears. I get a few birds as well, but life is hard on the chipmunks here and I want to help them out! They all go crazy for this mix, which has no fillers except corn (which chipmunks eat). I feed this mix combined with whole sunflower kernels (hulled), which I buy separately. Works like a charm and everyone’s happy. Except the bears.

I have three different types of woodpeckers in my area, the little Downey, Red Headed and large Pileated. This mixture has a great variety with sunflower seeds and several kinds of nuts. The pieces mixed with whole peanuts is the perfect blend to attract all three plus my other birds love it as well!

Why corn in woodpecker mix?

I bought this “no waste” woodpecker mix and everything is eaten besides the corn. Even the house sparrows and starlings turned their backs on it. It did draw 3 crows

I bought this “no waste” woodpecker mix and everything is eaten besides the corn. Even the house sparrows and starlings turned their backs on it. It did draw 3 crows to the feeder which I adore but it’s a lot of money to spend when a huge part is not relished.
