The panels do not detach form each other. The Exercise Pen can be set up in many different configurations.

Can the pen be opened up and used as a fence?

This pen can be detached to use as a fence, but the fence may not be stable, as the pen is not balanced to free-stand.

My daughter was hesitant to put her puppy in a restrictive environment such as the standard crates. This pen offers a much better alternative, because it is spacious, non-restrictive and see through. Additionally, being able to select the shape is nice as well. Pets can see everything going on while still being contained in a certain space. Added benefit is the door that allows pets to actually walk out of the pen, as opposed to having to lift them out which can be cumbersome as the pet grows.

Not Recommended!!

I bought a wire exercise pen in 2012 and had to replace it because the spring on the door gave out. It was made by a different brand and the door closed differently,

I bought a wire exercise pen in 2012 and had to replace it because the spring on the door gave out. It was made by a different brand and the door closed differently, but you also needed to secure the structure closed with metal clips. I thought I was safe buying this pen because it is made by Midwest Pets, but my 16 pound puppy is more than capable to knocking over this structure. The whole front of this exercise pen is just not secure. I can't believe this structure is still being sold. I am now on a search to find a wire exercise pen like the one I bought more than 10 years ago....hoping one is still sold somewhere. Will gladly send this one back.

Good for small pups

I recently got two puppies, and as they have grown a little in the past couple of weeks, from the first week of having them in my living room, they stay in place,

I recently got two puppies, and as they have grown a little in the past couple of weeks, from the first week of having them in my living room, they stay in place, but if they begin to roughhouse a bit, then the play pen will move when pushed up against it. It comes with pins you can put into the ground, but those are not helpful, as I have wood floors. I'm don't think they will grow to be very big, but when full grown, they might be able to jump over it. This would be perfect for a small breed like the one in the photo. I believe my pups are going to be small-medium sized.
