FAQ

What is a herbivore?

Herbivores are animals that eat only plants. This includes hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas and other common small animal pets.

Why does a herbivore need hay?

Feeding hay to an herbivore is not an option; it is a necessity. A high quality grass hay should be available at all times. Hay not only provides the roughage essential to maintaining proper teeth wear, but it is vital to maintaining a healthy, functioning gastrointestinal system. They need a diet high in fiber and low in carbohydrates to prevent diarrhea and other digestive complications.

  • Smelled nice but didn't impress

The guinea pigs don't seem to like any of the store bought hay I have tried. I got some from a farmer and they eat it out of dish happily. I put this in a dish and it just sat there. I hope my hamster won't be as picky.

My 3 year old lop refuses any hay other than the Oxbow Organic Meadow Hay. He knows the difference and will either ignore or try to kick out any other kind. I can always count on Chewy to have it available.

  • Oxbow--Quality control on vacation??

    By on

Oxbow's Organic Meadow Hay has been my go-to for YEARS for my house rabbits. I could always count on it as something a little different for variety's sake, easy to reach in and grab a handful for their breakfast--a wonderful combination of textures and flavors. The bag I just purchased consisted of "grass clippings" (1" and under) and thick sticks too large for my 12-year-old Lionhead's tiny teeth! Please return to your previous quality, Oxbow! We count on you!!

  • DO NOT BUY THIS NOW - maybe later

    By on

Been feeding this to my Bun for 8 months. Always a nice green, thinner, soft hay. (we use 4 different hays to keep her a variety). This was her favorite - almost like a super treat! Lately over the last 6 weeks this has been JUNK! Thick Brown like plain really old straw. Bun won't touch it. Doesn't even look like the same hay at all. Maybe Oxbow made a mistake or perhaps it's just a bad batch. Kind of funny since they say they "hand sort" hay. If it goes back to the nice green hay, then I'll get more, but not this JUNK now. :( Bun is not happy either.
